"Democrat" and "Republican" are fluid and changing terms and have not meant the same parties as we know them today. Yes, Lincoln was a "Republican..." and then the "Republican" party absorbed the Southern Democrate (AKA the Dixiecrats) who believed in segregation and general conservatism, and essentially became known for neoconservative policies (not all of which are necessarily bad... no more than everything the Democratic party upholds is necessarily good).
