This is for people who don't know their history... "Democrat" and "Republican" are fluid and changing terms and have not meant the same parties as we know them today. Heck, 200 years ago, those names weren't used (except in the sense that everyone who participated in the new democracy was a "democrat"). Whigs anyone?

Yes, Lincoln was a "Republican..." and then the "Republican" party absorbed the Southern Democrate (AKA the Dixiecrats) who believed in segregation and general conservatism, and essentially became known for neoconservative policies (not all of which are necessarily bad... no more than everything the Democratic party upholds is necessarily good).

As for MLK's party affiliation, who cares? It wasn't the same party as today no matter when you're talking about...</description>
