Mixed Media Watch is getting a makeover
JC & CVK
We started this blog back in April of 2004 on a dinky little Xanga. Back then, we weren’t quite sure what MMW was, but generally we thought of it as a place where we could document all the ways in which mixed race people, interracial couples and families were portrayed in the media, and then organize people to give feedback on those representations. We would organize letter-writing campaigns so that media outlets could hear both positive and negative feedback and hopefully, learn how to construct more realistic, three-dimensional representations.
Well, Mixed Media Watch has changed a lot since those early days. Over the past couple of years, we’ve gradually expanded the scope of what we cover beyond just those issues that affect the mixed community. There are so many interesting topics at the intersection of race and pop culture, and of course, those topics affect mixed folks as well because after all, we’re also part of those communities of color!
So what does this all mean?
Well first of all, Mixed Media Watch is getting a new name. Back when were Watching Media representations of Mixed people, the name made a lot of sense. But nowadays, it’s not all that descriptive anymore. What’s the new name? Well you’ll just have to check back on Monday and find out.
Second, this blog will be getting a brand-new look. Back in April we surveyed all of you to get some feedback on what you liked about MMW, what you didn’t like, what you wish we’d cover more of, etc. Quite a few of you mentioned that you thought the blog’s design and color scheme was a bit blah. We agree with you - we’re sick of the grey too.
Which is why we’re going to switch to the same blog template we use for the Addicted to Race site. It’s nice and clean, lots of white space, and it’ll allow us to use widgets in the sidebar that do cool things like show you the most recent comments, the latest posts, allow you to sign up for the New Demographic monthly email newsletter, etc.
Finally, the blog will have a brand-new URL to go along with the new name. But we’ll set it up so that if you go to www.mixedmediawatch.com, it’ll automatically redirect you to the new blog. However, this process of transferring the blog to the new domain is going to take a lot of work, and it’s quite possible that Carmen will screw the whole thing up.
So if you check MMW this weekend it’ll be a hot mess. Hopefully by Monday though, everything will be up and running. Fingers crossed!

Best of luck on the makeover! I have assigned your blog as a “site to watch” for my students education class and they love it as well. Your site and the comments provide a lot of entry points for topics of discussion in my class and ideas for projects for students to produce. Thanks to all and best of luck!
