Why we love Jennifer Beals

CVK
jennifer bealsJen and I are huge fans of Jennifer Beals. Why? Well we are, of course, children of the 80s and have probably watched Flashdance about 97 times between the both of us. But that’s not the only reason we love her.

If you’ve never heard or read her speech at the 2005 GLAAD Image Awards, you have to check out the video on YouTube. She talks about growing up never seeing representations of people like her, how important it is to see realistic, three-dimensional portrayals of underrepresented communities, and more. Many people don’t know this, but she was actually the one who pushed for her character, Bette Porter, on ‘The L Word’ to be mixed like her. As a result, the show is one of the few on TV that deals intelligently with issues of mixed race identity, interracial relationships, authenticity, legitimacy, parenting, etc.

And if you’d like to sign up for The Official Jennifer Beals Fan Club, just send us a $25 money order for a year’s membership. ;) Just kidding of course!

Oh, I thought you just loved Jennifer Beals because she’s HOT :)

I really appreciate the subtle character portrayals in “The L Word”. I even did a post about it.
