I will be very interested to listen to your “gender wars” segment next Tuesday in the black and Asian communities. Is this show going to be about your presumptions that black/asian men and women are at each others throats based on some of the garbage and nonsense that is ciculatating as of late. Based on some of the things I see posted here you would think most black/Asian men and women hate each other and the world is coming to an end. Also can’t we say a “gender war” is going on across all ethnic groups. Why the emphasis on blacks and asians? It’s that bad? Wow. This sounds like it might full of ignorance but I’ll listen and see. Thanks.

If you read carefully, you’ll find that MMW reports on WHAT THE MEDIA SAYS. Of course the contributors around here and the founders themselves don’t think that all black/asian men hate women or whatever. But the media (and sometimes, individuals of those groups themselves) are promoting it as so, and that’s a problem. That’s actually the point. What’s out there in pop culture is not the reality, and it’s scary that a lot of people are getting their information, and sometimes their emulatory behavior, from the lowest common denominator.
Of course, it’s easier than actually, I dunno, self-analysis and actively knowing people from various cultures/ethnicities/walks of life.

Antonette, I can completely understand how you would get the wrong idea by reading that one-line description of the topic. If you click over to Addicted to Race, you’ll see a post (which we’ll also post here tomorrow) with a longer description of what we’re going to cover:
http://www.addictedtorace.com/
“We’ll be discussing the gender wars that seem to exist in the African-American and Asian-American communities. Is there really tension between men and women? Is it just hyped by the media? If so, why are we buying into it? How can we find a more productive and complex way to discuss issues like interracial relationships and gender privilege without resorting to accusations and counter-accusations?”
Please do tune in and I encourage you to call us with your thoughts - it should be a really interesting conversation. –CVK
