Support ‘Red Doors’ - opening tonight!
JC & CVK
Hey MMW readers, as you know, we’re all about supporting realistic, three-dimensional portrayals of people of color in the media. So if you’re in NYC this weekend, we encourage you to head out to watch RED DOORS, a film by Georgia Lee, Mia Riverton and Jane Chen. If you go tonight, you can even get into the exclusive premiere party! Details are below. We’ll also be organizing an MMW field trip to go and watch it next week - stay tuned for more details.
RED DOORS will be opening in New York City at the Angelika Film Center and ImaginAsian Theater on September 8. Cast and filmmakers will be at screenings throughout opening weekend for Q&As.
The premiere party will be held at Katra (217 Bowery St. @ Rivington) on Friday, September 8. Doors open at 10pm. The only way to get into the party is to bring a RED DOORS ticket stub (from the Angelika or ImaginAsian) dated September 8 to the door.
RED DOORS will be opening in the Los Angeles area at the Laemmle Music Hall (9036 Wilshire Blvd.) and the Laemmle Playhouse in Pasadena (673 E. Colorado Blvd.) on September 22. RED DOORS will be opening in a Landmark theater (TBD) in San Francisco on September 22.

As background info, the movie has been somewhat controversial in the Asian-American community. Some people have criticized the film for not featuring any Asian men as romantic interests in the film, leading Mike Kang, director of The Motel, to write this really great, impassioned post on his blog. Here’s an excerpt:
Most people want film to be purely about escapism and wishfulfillment. I have nothing against that. That’s why Snakes On A Plane exists. But what baffles me is when people don’t realize that not all films are about that. If you want to see a film that is a deeply personal story about characters that are three-dimensional and maybe reflect some universal truths about the human condition, then you should watch a movie like Red Doors. If you are only interested in seeing Asian Americans as superheros, hotties and only winning in the end, then you have to wait for the next installment of Jackie Chan Adventures (or go out and make our own damn movie). Don’t hold a movie like Red Doors to an unrealistic standard. That is like getting made at Woody Allen for not having enough car chasses in his movies.
