Jen gives thumbs down to new round of Survivor

CVK
survivor crewWell, unfortunately, the rumors have been confirmed. Indeed, the new season of “Survivor” is going to pit people of different races against one another to compete. There will be four tribes of course — black, Hispanic, Asian, and white. Sounds like a great idea, right? :| Well Jen sounded off on behalf of New Demographic in today’s USA Today.

CBS announced Wednesday that Survivor: Cook Islands (Sept. 14, 8 ET/PT) will start off with a controversial bang: 20 contestants will be divided into teams by race, pitting whites, blacks, Hispanics and Asians against each other…

Mark Burnett said Wednesday that the idea was in response to criticism Survivor has not been ethnically diverse enough. “No one knows anything (about the show), so this is all simply an assumption.” He says: “Maybe it’s showing it’s OK to have social time in your ethnic group — it doesn’t mean you have to hate everyone else. There’s good, bad, mean and conniving in every race. It’s a valid experiment.”

But to what end, asks Jen Chau, co-founder of New Demographic, an anti-racism training company.

“If the producers are splitting the contestants up by race, it’s clear they want to show racial tensions, and they want the usual competitive trash-talking to devolve into racial slurs,” she says. “I don’t buy that they are merely trying to do the right thing by presenting a more diverse cast. Would any thinking person with truly good intentions think that pitting racial groups against one another is a good way to bring diversity?”

[…] And, a group called New Demographic, which “mobilizes people through a variety of media and in-person workshops to work towards an anti-racist future,” has been at the center of responding to this horrible idea by CBS producers to “diversify” the show by using such divisive tactics. […]

Ohh, the racists are drooling in anticipation of this premier! Kids in a candy store!

Man, when will this gene die off? @sses keep breeding @sses!

Supposedly, the races will only be separated for a “short time”. Or, that’s what I heard on one of ABC or NBC’s morning shows this morning. If that’s the case, then yeah, I can see how this could bring racial harmony. Let’s throw racial slurs while we’re apart, then fall in love like Boston Rob once we are united as a team. Ooh, maybe the show will result in a bunch of biracial superbabies that will grow up and save/unite the world!!

Yeah, this is a joke. Can’t believe how shocked I am by it.

So segregating the races on a show like this is their answer to cultural diversity? YIKES! Darwin would’ve been pleased, I’m sure….

one more reason to shut of the idiot books and settle in with a good book and some music.

I’m taking a wait and see approach right now. I am excited about the racial diversity.

I am a little concerned about some things. Firstly, it seems that either people don’t know much about the show, or are changeing the termonolgy to suit their viewpoints. Firstly, there are no teams, but tribes. The “pitting against” will only be in the physical challenges, the social game takes place solely within the tribe, so if they were really trying to pit races against each other, they would make the tribes mixed, in order to see how the social aspects play put, which is really where the drama is on the show.

I want to see how this plays out, and how the show handles it.

Is American Culture reverting back to times past, where segregation was a way of making one race feel superior based on their race?
