‘Survivor’ cast to be split into racial tribes?

CVK
survivor (Thanks to Johnny for this tip!) I seriously hope this is just a wacked-out rumor that’s going around the blogosphere. According to reality blurred, the next season of Survivor will split up the cast into four tribes so that each racial group competes against each other! WTF?

There have been persistent rumors, supported by photographs of challenges, that there will be four tribes at the start of the game. However, those won’t necessarily be dissolved immediately: instead, they’ll be split in brand-new way, “divided up into 4 groups by race, 5 white, 5 black, 5 hispanic, and 5 asian,” according to a rumor sent to both SurvivorFever.net and the True Dork Times.

    Black/White (This Time With Asian/Latino!)…

The Bunim/Murray geniuses have come up with yet another way to “shake up” television with “cutting edge” theater. How? Good old fashioned segregation! Yippee! You’ve probably heard, the next tedious “Survivor” …

Oh, it’s true alright. I just saw a segment on the today show. It’s also nauseating. I don’t think we need to encourage racial divisions in a reality TV show. I don’t think it’s a good format to explore any real race issues it’s just a publicity tactic. Ugh….

A very ridiculous idea, if you ask me. I guess viewers of the show are expected to cheer for the “tribe/race” they are from? It’s also been reported on CNN:

I just saw the posting of the Probst interview on CBS’s morning show (via Defamer). Even Harry Smith said that it made him a bit nauseated. They claim it is all in the name of making the show more diverse. Could they have done this without a gimmick? Plus, Probst kept on switching between “race” and “ethinicity” in his defense of the show. The Hispanic group is not even rep. of all Hispanics, the same for the Asian American group, etc… Watch this season get pulled or influence a dissertation or two. Ugh.

This is representative of the public resegregation of our society by race after the short experiment of the post-civil rights era. Yes, people stayed pretty segregated socially but many public and private institutional policies implemented in the sixties and seventies were aimed at providing at least superficial integration.

That is no longer a goal of the larger society. Instead, we have witnessed the rise of identity politics framed as zero-sum games and the coming of a new cohort in which overt racism is relatively sparse and taught to pay lipservice to the concept of colorblindness. Hence, now it is not as troublesome to separate people by race and pit them against each other because it is not “forced by law,” “it is natural,” and “we are all equal.”

I have not seen any clips or advertisements for the show but it will be interesting - given the proclivity of t.v. shows to cast women of mixed race - how they will handle the racial classifications of two or more races. Overall, I think think the show’s structure will be damaging primarily because of the racialized nature of the competition and the inevitable conclusions that will be drawn about the racial group that wins.

I smell an (unethical) psychologist at work here to amp up ratings i.e. more conflict. Just putting people in teams (you’re x tribe and you’re y tribe) is enough to cause animosity/competition between ppl especially when competing for limited and desired resources. I am quite a bit unsettled at how things will play out when ppl aren’t just split into teams but these teams are along racial lines. Who wants to start placing bets on which types of racial characters are ’selected’ for survivor - a strong, loud black woman, a weak asian man, etc.

Also, doesn’t this type of selection system exclude mixed race individuals - unless they’re prepared to ’select’ which team it is they play for, which would only reinforce the idea that mixed ppl have to choose one or the other.
