LISTENER FEEDBACK
This episode is dedicated exclusively to listener feedback. Here’s what we cover:

  • The host of GOP Exposed calls in with a voicemail, asking why it is that black people are so rarely shown with black romantic partners or families on TV or in movies.
  • Alethia Hostetter writes in about intersectionality: how oppression, identity, and privilege intersect and interact in complex ways in people’s lives.
  • Faye, a 16 year-old high school student, emails us about how race sometimes causes tension in her group of ethnically diverse friends.
  • A listener calls in with a voicemail, asking how as a white person she can deal with the anger that’s often directed towards her because of her race, and the hostility she sometimes feels from black women towards her interracial relationship.
  • Alex Gombach writes in asking us if he should be offended when Chinese people call him “lo faan” or “lao guei,” terms used to describe “foreigners.”
  • Mark Lind emails us asking about the implications of race as a social construct.
  • Deborah Wilson writes to us in reaction to Carmen’s rant in episode 32 about the coded ways in which we talk about race without appearing to talk about race. She sees a similar dynamic in the backlash against disco in the late 70s
  • Ekachai Jiaravanont emails us in reaction to our jokes about the listener who asked if we date Asian men, since we talk so much about their problematic media representations. He thinks we trivialized and ridiculed the listener without understanding where the “angry Asian man” syndrome comes from.

Hello, Jen and Carmen, I am 13 years old, African-American living in Chicago suburbs. I really love your show and I listen to it all the time, whenever I get the chance. I really want to thank you for making a podcast that deals with theses issues, because I find that many people tend to not want to talk about it, because they are afraid of the comments.

What I want to talk about is 2 things. One, I’m not going to say to be ignorant and think that racism is completely gone, but what makes me really sad is sites like Stormfront which has 243 members, from around the world. That may seem small but thats still many people that belive they are superior toevery other race. I’ve read a lot of their topics, with an unbiased mind and all I saw was, forgive my language, racist, bigoted BULLSHIT! Such lines of how if you were white you were superior to all other races due to genetics, and all other nonsense there. I’m not blaming every white or anything and I myself am sickened by it becuase I have many friends that are white, some older than me, yet not one has this kind of view, and I like to be proud that when I meet someone new I don’t look at race or whatever but their merit.

Another thing is groups like Prussian Blue. I’m not sure if any of you watched the interview on Abc. This one is just as bad as Stormfront. These girls are just as old as me, yet they talk the same crap that Stormfront speaks. They claim to be all about White Pride, I believe you can have pride in your heritage but not to the point that you want to kill every other race on the planet.

Finally for a roundtable, I have this question. I’ve read on many places about the animosity between Blacks and Asians. It’s very weird to me, because I’ve never seen instances of this myself. But I’ve read on many places, how stereotypes started the animosity. For blacks, it was some old, asian, store owner who felt superior, and always looked down on you, would make sure that you didn’t try to steal anything, but when white person came to their store, they would welcome them with open arms, and not even bother. For asians it was, a black, ghetto, thug that was always showing off and would try to rape women, and evey other crap. So I was thinkig if you two would like to shed some light on the this. Thank You.
