Bill Owens wishes Jen Chau was his daughter

CVK
bill owens(Thanks to Barbara for this tip!) According to The Denver Post, Colorado Republican Governor Bill Owens recently told a morning radio show host that he wished his three kids “had more of a Jewish and Asian work ethic.” Yes, he takes his model minority stereotype very seriously:

“There are many days … when I wish they’d have more aspects of Jewish and Asian culture. I wish they’d get up earlier in the morning, I wish they would work harder and in many respects that’s what we do see out of many of the Asian and the Jewish culture. My kids are all Anglo, they’re Irish, English and they’re wonderful kids and I wish they’d work a little harder sometimes. Sometimes, I wish that I had some more of those traits… I think that we need to have a debate on what it is about certain backgrounds that leads to more success,” the governor said.

Jen Chau, as a woman who hit the genetic jackpot by being of mixed Jewish and Asian descent, perhaps you could offer the governor some advice? ;)

Hits keep on comin’. We still talking honestly here?…

(More?) Proof that Democrats can be dumb asses, too. Former Colorado governor Dick Lamm claimed that Asians and Jews have more ambition than Hispanics and Blacks (no word on how he feels about the hakajin). Well, he got back up from current Republican …

wait a minute…he wishes HIS kids had a different work ethic? hmmmmm I guess he was too busy working on his career to raise them…

I bet he really wants to debate why “certain backgrounds” aren’t successful.

I guess I know why I hit the snooze 4 times before getting up.

    exactly what i was thinking…

as a young black college student that comes from hard working black folk, i really find mindsets like this unbeliveably exhausting.

are we really debating whether education is more highly valued in certain cultures than in others?

Ben - Nope, I think we’re making fun of what this idiot-governer is really thinking ;)

In case you are serious (or rather, if someone takes your comment as such):
Remember, he’s not talking about people from China, he’s talking about Chinese-Americans… and “Jewish” is a religion, which has ties to many ethnicities, which may or may not have cultural affiliations associated with education.

Either way, it’s a stupid thing to say… what I’d love to see is how diverse his executive branch is, and whether any employee of his who is NOT of his “model minority” bothers to say anything (privately or publicly).

Hmm. After writing and deleting a bunch, I think if I’m trying this hard to find a way to defend the guy, I should give up :)

They’re his children, if he wants to make them get up earlier and work harder, he can probably find a way to do that without invoking cultural stereotypes, regardless of whether or not they (the stereotypes, not the kids!) have any merit.

what an idiot governor…doesn’t he know that kids’ work ethics takes after their parents.

not necessarily true, candy. i’ve seen some total bums spawned from hardworking parents.

So all cultures are now the same? Last I knew, different cultures did have different tendencies, different emphases, and different kinds of work ethics. Maybe you disagree with the particulars, but it sounds as if you’re disagreeing with that in principle. That strikes me as really strange.

There is that bit at the end about genetics, which helps me explain why you’re upset at what he said, but I don’t at all see how it’s a fair portrayal of what he said. He was talking about cultures, not genetics. If he really had said that, I’d be just as offended by it as you are, but that doesn’t seem to me to be what he said.
