Fashion and diversity
Nina (a returning MMW guest contributor!)
In light of the recent posts about the need for diversity and appropriate representation in the fashion world, let’s all take a look at the September fashion books. The September issues of Vogue, Glamour, Elle etc. are traditionally the biggest issues of the year and even Vanity Fair has got into the game with their style issue. For years I have saved clippings of objectionable representations in magazines (does anyone remember the truly tasteless Naomi Campbell “Gone with the Wind” spread in the late 90’s?). Let’s see what this year’s issues have to offer, and of course continue the dialogue here at MMW.

It figures. The fashion industry needs to get with the times instead of staying in the 19th century.

This ad that appeared in Fashion Rocks, a supplement that is being polybagged with most of Conde Nast’s September magazines, is generating a lot of buzz in the blogosphere. It’s an photo of Gwyneth Paltrow with the words “I’m African” at the bottom: http://www.bestweekever.tv/2006/08/10/gwyneth-paltrow-shows-her-true-colors/

Whats the big deal with the Gwenyth poster–There are white folks who are african. They may not be indigenous (or may be they are if you believe all humans can be traced back to Africa). But then again, the white folks here in the USA ain’t indigenous either–so if say Bill O’Reilly can sing I’m proud to be an American–Gweny can rock a I’m African on her cheek.
