VW Rabbit commercial: interracial babies?
jordisgirl (a new MMW guest contributor!)
I just noticed the new VW Rabbit commercial…the premise is that they reproduce “quickly”, of course, rapidly growing from the first two or four cars into a whole city-full. However, I couldn’t help but notice that the original couple were black & white and some of the offspring were white or black…but so many are grey. Just an interesting note…
Note from CVK: You can watch the commercial for yourself here on YouTube. This ad reminds me a bit of that milk bottle miscegenation t-shirt that Jen came across a few weeks back.

I really don’t think that VW was thinking about race with this ad. The car only comes in a few different colors, and since black and white make grey, there you have it. Let’s say they had a red car and a white one. VW doesn’t make a pink Rabbit. As for some cars being black, some white, and some grey, remember doing Mendelian charts in high school biology?

C: Dude, I was thinking the same thing re: Mendelian crosses…
I do think it’s cute, though, in a way that I didn’t really find the milk-bottle shirt cute.
If anything it reminds me of the multiplying rabbits in that credit card commercial (as the customer waits for approval, the rabbits his daughter buys become 3, then 10, then… all to the tune of Barry White).

Gatamala,
Yep, that’s the Mendelism.

And I thought I was a science geek… Anyhoo.. one thing I noticed was that some of the cars we’re mixed black and white (different colored panels). Those had my interest more than the implications of grey…
And that does replicate some mosaicism you see in mice, for example that have a gene linked to color that are mated with a mouse line of another color (for the other science geeks).

the reason why some of them are mixed black, white, and grey is b/c in europe, it’s the 30th anniversary of the Rabbit and the mult coloured one is called the Harlequin… it’s suppose to respresent all the colours the rabbit is made…
cept in america we also have blue, red, and gree….

Anon (and any one else who cares) the song in the commercial is titled, “The Birds and the Bees,” by Patrick and Eugene from the album, “Postcard from Summerisle.” I found this website looking for the same info! Actually found title on http://advertising.about.com/od/commercialspotlight/p/spotlightrabbit.htm

It took about five airings of the commercial before it dawned on me that this commmercial might have racial overtones. I have to admit it is cute. I am black and did not find it offensive, just interesting that VW would use it.

it’s not racial… it’s jus tthe colors the car comes in… (in US we have a few more colors)
but black and white make grey… if you build one online, you watch this other commercial with the same song.
it uses the car you just built and a “mate” car or cgi brown and white rabbit.
then you get to see the offspring after the commercial… some are furry cars, some have multicolored parts like a blue door and a green hood on a silver car. sometimes you get a silver cgi rabbit with rearview mirror ears.
clever… very very clever, those guys over at VW. the jetta site-let is fun too.. build a jetta and watch it crash into humpty-dumpty’s wall or a chicken truck, etc.

Anyone that has every owned rabbits knows that this commercial has absolutely no racial undertones!! Rabbits are usually white black or grey, and when they have babies, the are usually a mix of all these colors. If you say this commercial has racial undertones than you would also think that Rabbits themselves are a racial undertone.
