Derek Jeter taunted for being biracial
KT (a returning MMW guest contributor!)
Sunday night on 60 minutes, baseball superstar Derek Jeter discussed his youth, his family, and being taunted as a child for being biracial. He is the son of an African-American father and an Irish-American mother.
Jeter says it continued even after he had been drafted number #1 by the Yankees. The full interview is available online here.

As a child only ? As an adult, I get unwarranted comments that reference my background by so called educated professional people. I’m sure what’s going on in the back of their mind is even worse. The only differences between being a child and an adult is that other people aren’t forced to be in each others presence so often, and adults with some sense figure out to avoid situations which are going to bring up issues.

I think he is showing his courage which all bi racial, multi racial, mixed what ever term you need to use, because we can’t run from those rude, obnoxious, arrogant, assholes every day of our lives. We have to live too. Honey, and they’re are more than you can shake a stick at.

Bottom line. Kids can be cruel. I was taunted too for a variety of reasons and I’m not biracial….I was taunted for being studious, for speaking articulately, for having a (flatter) nose with no bridge and a host of other reasons.
…so i haven’t read this article because I’m not surprised. I guess this shows that in many ways when we think our society is growing more tolerant — maybe not as much as we would like to think. …
Such is life. The very thinks Jeter was taunted about as a kid are the things that make him an appealing/likeable sex symbol now. Go figure.

When the bi-racial dating began “way back then” my mother said, “it will never work out and the children will bear the brunt of it”.. She was right.
