All men of color in TV Guide’s “hot” men issue

mtevc (a returning MMW guest contributor!)
wentworth millerMissed this one when it was brand new. Caught a moldy copy on the supermarket shelves. But, last week’s issue of TV Guide (June 19) featured four different covers—all hyping the “HOT” man on TV.

Interestingly, not one of the men featured on the cover was white! One cover featured Daniel Dae Kim, star of ABC’s TV show “Lost,” and the other covers featured Ricardo Antonio Chavira from Desperate Housewives on ABC, yummy man Wentworth Miller from the FOX drama “Prison Break”, and moody hottie Isaiah Washington from my secret pleasure “Grey’s Anatomy” on ABC.

They buried the other hotties (including the white actors selected as TV’s sexiest men) inside the issue! Grab a towel, and check out the photo shoots here.

I noticed that a few weeks ago. I was really shocked, and I couldn’t help wondering if they were treating Wentworth Miller as the token “white” guy.

A list that fails to include Daniel Sunjata (Franco on Rescue Me) is just wroooooong! lol

Given that Miller always states proudly that he is mixed, I don’t think the TV Guide editors tossed him as a “token”–I hate that word in the racial context. But dang, isn’t it freaking cool to think that all of the men were of color?

BTW, does anyone watch the 4400? I think the show has done a good job with mixed-race couples. The show’s first season highlighted the time-crossed love of Richard and Lily Tyler, two people who met and fell in love after being kidnapped from the past and taken to the future. Richard was a pilot in the Korean War. As an African-American man in the 1950s, he had to navigate the brutal racism of his time. Lily, a Caucasian woman, on the otherhand, was a young professional, wife, and mother from the late 1990s. As their story unfolded over the first two seasons, we learned how they met in the future, dealt with internal concerns about racism, became parents, and endured the issues of being a new kind of minority.

This season, Richard and Lily’s toddler Isabelle aged rapidly to become a 20 year old. Consequently, Lily suffered accelerated aging. Richard and Lily had to face the end of their relationship. As I watched the end of their life together, I was struck by how well the writers handled this mixed-race couple as just a married couple meeting the uncertainty of death and painful loss.

Shortly after Lily’s death, the newly grown Isabelle became involved with Shawn, the leader of the 4400 Centre. Again another “interracial” relationship that didn’t focus on race. Isabelle is a brown biracial “woman” and Shawn a Caucasian man. The tension in their relationship is about the differences in their age; Isabelle’s maturity; and Isabelle’s powers.

Yesterday, I went onto the 4400 message board at USA Network. The postings about Isabelle and Shawn’s romance never discussed race but the other bigger issues. Part of me wonders why no one is discussing the elephant in the room. Maybe the elephant is becoming a mouse?

While I agree with certain points you’ve made, I’m afraid I have to tell you that the elephant is FAR from becoming a mouse.

As it’s been said a million times on MMW, a lot of people think that “color-mute = colorblind,” so they avoid discussing race.

As far as Isabelle goes, I agree that her relationship with Shawn is pretty well handled in terms of race. However, I’ve been a little cautious about the character, because I fear she may be another example of the “Mixed people are saviors/terrors” school of thought.

    But yeah, great show.

I don’t follow the show, but I have friends who do, so I know the basics.

Merq, I’m probably dating myself, but when you said “mixed people are saviors/terrors”, I had an 80s flashback to V, Elizabeth, and that “pretenama” horsehockey.

(For anyone not a scifi geek, alien/human hybrid grows up quickly, heals the sick (I think), is alternately tutored by a priest and a Nazi-esque alien leader, and saves the world from nuclear destruction).

heh. Good call on the whole V thing.
I guess I’m dating myself as well, but what the hell? I found the DVD last year, and damn-near choked on my drink.

yeah i wish Daniel Sunjata ( from Rescue Me on FX) was on the list..i met him and love his acting..he is also mixed and is extremely gorgeous :)
