Nigel’s Fingerprint explores mixed race identity
nigel's fingerprint “What colour am I Daddy?” That’s what 6-year old Nigel Jenkins asks his father after he is called a nigger in the schoolyard. It’s 1974 and Nigel’s mother Mona, is black while his father David is white. When David finds his son trying to wash the colour off his skin, he searches for the right way to explain why colour is a gift. Winner of the Kodak Award for Best Canadian Short Film at Toronto’s Reel World Festival and nominated for a Melvin Van Peebles Award at the San Francisco Black Film Festival.

Naveen Andrews to play Jodie Foster’s fiance in new thriller
naveen andrewsWarner Bros. Pictures has set Lost star Naveen Andrews and Mary Steenburgen to join Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard in The Brave One, the Neil Jordan-directed thriller about a woman struggling to recover from a brutal attack by setting out on a dark psychological and physical journey for revenge and justice. The film will be released in June 2007. Andrews will play the man who’s engaged to marry the victim (Foster), while Howard plays a police officer. Steenburgen is the victim’s boss at the newspaper for which she writes.

Afro-Punk now out on DVD
afropunk Afro-Punk, a 66-minute documentary, explores race identity within the punk scene. More than your everyday, Behind the Music or typical “black history month” documentary this film tackles the hard questions, such as issues of loneliness, exile, inter-racial dating and black power. We follow the lives of four people who have dedicated themselves to the punk rock lifestyle. They find themselves in conflicting situations, living the dual life of a person of color in a mostly white community.

    Wow! Thanks for the links! The “Nigel’s Fingerprint” synopis is heartbreaking to read. Being a former punk rocker myself, Afro-Punk looks good too.

    the tagline for Afro-Punk is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen, I remember when this film came out, I wanted to get a t-shirt with that on it. I don’t believe in using the N-word so I never did it, but if anything would persuade me to make an exception, it’d be that!
