Cindy Yu - text champion

(Thanks to Angry Asian Man for this…) Obviously a play on the success of Napoleon Dynamite (Kip Dynamite, specifically), Dodgeball, Spellbound, and aimed at the youth market, Kyocera has come out with a ridiculous and completely non-serious new ad-campaign for the new Switch Back Virgin Mobile cell phone with the character of Cindy Yu. Now, on the website you get a chance to see Cindy’s parents: an Asian woman (suggestively Chinese, I guess through the last name) with an accent and a white man doing an Ali G blackface without the actual blackface which is basically him talking and dressing like a stereotypical black gangsta.
OK, so it’s obvious they’re doing the old “they’re from two different worlds, what’s going on?” thing which is highlighted by such picture captions as “My Mom and my Dad: After all these years, they’re still so in love. It makes me want to barf.” which I guess I can chalk up to teen I-hate-my-parents more so than the “they look weird together” racism. But she does have the “ethnic” last name which I realize at this point is really being ticky-tac with the details.
If you can look past the bizarre advertising, you can read a review of the phone itself here.

For some reason this kind of “comedy” seems to be spreading, while simultaneouly feeling 100% played out at the same time.

Yeah. Everyone’s doing that “redneck gangsta dad and Chinese/Native American mom have daughter with stereotypical Russian coach” thing. And I wouldn’t call it a comedy. Big Momma’s House 2, now that’s a comedy.

I think it’s hilarious…if you take the time to actually see the videos on the site there ridiculously funny. I’d rather see this kind of advertising than a bunch of no personality teenage actors trying to sell me a phone. I think it’s a dope concept.
