Movie version of Jhumpa Lahiri’s ‘The Namesake’ due this fall

the namesake kal penn mira nair Jhumpa Lahiri

Just spotted this over at Angry Asian Man. I had no idea there was a movie in the works! Or that Kal Penn had nabbed the part! (Penn is best-known for playing Kumar in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle: a movie I loved, but it’s great that he’s broken out of the comedy thing.)

Here’s the trailer for the movie adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Namesake : A Novel. Directed by Mira Nair, and starring Kal Penn. You might recall that Kal Penn was blogging his experiences last year while shooting the film. I haven’t read the book (I know, I know—I’ll try to pick it up this summer), but the movie looks pretty good. It’s scheduled to open in theaters on November 3rd.

Kal Penn is also in “Superman Returns” as Lex Luthor’s own personal Renfield!

i absolutely love lahiri’s book the interpretor of maladies…short stories, and some are just so lyrical and fabulous…

hey, and i also love harold and kumar go to white castle…that is priceless…talk about a wonderfully funny take on college life…a very typical one, yet it speaks to the stereotypes so well…love it…watched it three times and can’t stop laughing…

I didn’t like “The Namesake.” Character problems for me. Mainly, Gogol was unlikable and didn’t ring true. I thought the mother was the most endearing. So, hopefully, the movie will correct these and be a good watch.

As for “Maladies” it was okay. I was expecting much more from her.
