England’s very first Multiple Heritage Service supports mixed race youth

Sheffield is the first and only city in England so far that has a service specifically designed to provide support services to children and teenagers of mixed heritage:
A key objective of the service is also to raise pupils’ self-esteem, to boost their hopes and aspirations and especially improve their results, both in SATs and at GCSE.
Leigharner has also been involved in the creation of a new DVD, which is now available as a new resource for schools across the city…
Manager of the service Mado Knan said initiatives in schools had included both group work and one to one sessions - reaching over 700 young people over the last four years.
“We need to understand and respect their problems and their needs. Mixed race children do have issues with their identity which can be reflected in behaviour problems and poor results - they can become isolated in their school communities,” she said.
“Mixed heritage youngsters can also find themselves classed as black, and many don’t want that. It’s often the worst thing for them when they encounter racism from white people, who treat them as if they don’t count. They don’t know or aren’t sure which category they fit into - it’s like they are ‘other’.
“But it is important that schools address the issue of mixed heritage pupils - they are the fastest growing group in the city and it is estimated that by 2010 they will form nearly a quarter of the school population,” Mado added.

But I’d assume that the organization would provide services to ALL mixed teens, including those of South Asian heritage and all the rest in the UK, not just those of African or African-Carribbean descent.
I also assume that the “many don’t want that” line means “many don’t want to be categorized ONLY as black.” At least I hope that’s what the article means.

In the movie Ghandi, some Dutch South Africans call Ghandi black. Australians call the Aborigones black, though most scientists agree that they originally came from the area of Indonesia. I’m not sure what the term can denote in England…
