Kimora on the Tyra Banks Show

Kimora Lee Simmons was on the Tyra Banks Show earlier today, mainly to plug her new book Fabulosity : What It Is and How to Get It
I think this is something that many mixed people experience but something that doesn’t get discussed as much as the usual “what are you” problem. Basically, many of us (including yours truly) don’t look very ambiguous: we look mostly white, or mostly Asian, etc. As a result, we end up experiencing the racial spy syndrome (when people openly say racist things about an ethnic group, not realizing you’re a part of that group) but we also find ourselves in the peculiar position of having to defend our “mixedness” because people don’t believe that we’re part X, Y or Z.
Kimora also had her daughters on the show. Man, those are some cute-ass kids!!!! And then it all went awry when Tyra started demonstrating her recipes for gross junk food combinations (Inglewood Punch, anyone?). The segment culminated with her spraying her mouth full of whipped cream, in a bald attempt to get Best Week Ever to make fun of her. Before she cut to commercial, she asked the audience “Does anyone want whipped cream in their mouth?” Uh… I guess she’s trying to top her breast examination episode.

And although, they had 11 children. Some came out looking latino, my mother was the only one born with Asian features and gray hair. And she suffered the same mistreatment from people as Kimmora. Black people laughed at her because she looked different, and Asian students in school, called her a black Jap. So, I understand Kimmora’s plight through my mother. But the oddest thing is that my grandfather told his children they weren’t black, but Indian. And took pride in the fact that my grandmother was 1/2 Chinese. I guess in order to take away the sting of being ridiculed for being different, you have to see the beauty in it, and embrace it, like Kimmora.
