Heightened craving for “desi babes”

JC
Maya Arulpragasam a.k.a. MIAAn article in the Telegraph talks about how South Asian women are the new hot thing — yet another group of ethnic and exotic women for men to fetishize. :| Watch out my South Asian sisters! ;)

In general, American men perceive Indian women as being feminine, demure, sensual and family oriented. A typical Indian woman’s physical characteristics — straight hair, sharp features, petite form and lighter skin tone — are valued among other minority groups.

So it is no surprise that as south Asians step out into the American mainstream, it is the Indian woman who is leading the way, perpetuating an image of a desi woman that is at once feminine and empowered.

As part of the “model minority” in the US, the context of inter-racial relationships for south Asian women are markedly different from all other racial groups. According to Susan Koshy, Asian American studies professor at the University of Illinois and author of Sexual Naturalization: Asian Americans and Miscegenation, Indian women have become the possessors of significant “sexual capital” in the US. “Asian American women, in general, have greater sexual capital than the women of other racial groups [such as] African American, Latinas and native American women,” she says.

Koshy notes, however, that south Asian women do not have this history of sexual relationships developed in the context of military and political dominance with the US, as women from east and southeast Asia have as a result of US military involvement in the region. “Instead the exoticism of south Asian women in the US took place in a more amorphous and less freighted way through popular culture — Hollywood movies, and more recently through Bollywood, fashion, and pop music.”

According to one classificatory system, Indians are actually Caucasian. If you go by coloring, you wouldn’t think that, but in terms of ancestry and language history there is some reason for classifying them as Causacsian (depending on whether you’re classifying according to ancestry and language families or whether you’re trying to capture the social categories people actually use). Indo-European is the main language family of the Europeans, and it includes several Indian languages going back to Sanskrit. I think in the contemporary American context South Asians are clearly treated as a different race from whites, but there’s this interesting connection in terms of language and ancestry, with Indians being closer to Europeans than East Asians, Africans, Native Americans, or many other groups (leaving aside the mixed heritage of most African Americans and many Native Americans).

It’s noteworthy that the Nazis had to come up with a more specific word, because it wouldn’t do to talk about Caucasians as a race when Indians were considered Caucasian and clearly didn’t fall into the Nazi idea of what the preferred race should be.

I don’t know if that’s part of the explanation why white Americans are more likely to end up with Indians than any other non-white group (if that’s what this post is saying, which I’m not sure), but it might be part of why there’s more sense of allure to some. It’s an interesting fact about the history of racial categories, anyway, however you slice it. I agree that hair type and coloring probably occupy a greater explanatory role in the ordinary white person’s choices of romantic interest, since most people simply have their aesthetic preferences and don’t really think about language families or which peoples are genetically closer to each other. But the historical view of Indians and other South Asians is not the same among those who did all the classifying as with groups that were never considered Caucasian.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. My experience in Boston has been that Indian women are still talked about in very derogatory terms, compared to other asians.

Not sure if this article is hypothesizing that this trend is “coming” of if its already here, but it certainly hasn’t seeped into Boston yet (at least in my experience)

I think it’s taking place in a creepy pseudo-scientific way right in front of our eyes!!!!!!!! See Jeremy’s post. Run Desi women Run!!!!

What the hell is sexual capital? It looks like the men aren’t the only one’s with a festixh….

I don’t know if this has occurred to you, Jeremy, but that’s simply wrong.

See http://www.asian-nation.org/interracial.shtml and http://www.asian-nation.org/interracial2.shtml. Outmarriage rates to whites among South Asians are lower than that of East Asians.

Lets forget race and just deal w/ the misogyny of it all… *sigh* oh wait, they’re connected. All Indians and South Asians (gee, not the same thing, there are a lot of countries ethnicities and languages in that subcontinent)don’t look the same any more than all Europeans look the same.

I think you are just too rational, logical and clear thinking. See, it’s far easier to see all South Asians as looking alike even though there are South Asians with fair skin and blue eyes or black skinned (Dravidians) with brown eyes. After all, only Europeans are able to look different (Nordics, Slavs, and Mediterraneans). I mean a West African looks identical to an East African from Ethiopia, right? A Han Chinese looks just like a Thai, right?

Gatamala: An observation of how people have classified ethnic or racial groups does not amount to exoticism. Grow up.

Jay: The article seemed to be suggesting that. I wasn’t assuming it was true but offering one possible contributory factor if it’s true. I explicitly said that I didn’t know if that was what the post was trying to say, never mind if it’s true, but it seemed to me to be suggesting it. It makes more sense to me that it’s not true, because of the whole arranged marriage thing among South Asians, who try not to give it up if they live in predominantly white areas.

Its kind of amusing the author would take the class of females that are in Bollywood or hollywood (ie, actresses in an industry notorious for enforcing unwritten rules for women’s weight, skin tone, age, etc.) as accurate representative of how the average south asian women look. Thats kind of like saying Brad Pitt is an accurate representation of your average white male—when in reality Newt Gingrich is probably the more accurate representation.

    bertie,

Damn, you can go to Crunch Fitness and take “south Asian-style” classes to lose weight & spice up your sex life.

to Jeremy Pierce: as far as indians being closer gene pool wise to caucasians…that is true and not true…the indigenous folks who inhabited the region certainly were not caucasian

  16. Lyonside wrote:

mtevc and jeremy: it’s both and neither. India has been a trade CENTER for millenia. With trade comes travelers and immigrants. The dominant Indian CULTURES have also been around in many forms for millenia, and varients have moved in and out of the geographical region.

Without substantial prehistorical archaeology that retrieves skelatons (specifically skulls in good enough shape to possible reconstruct theoretical facial features), it is pretty much impossible to say what is “indigenous” and what isn’t. I also suspect the overall climate and constant presence of civilization means that there will be no remarkably preserved “bog person” found in southern India (a la northern Europe) to provide things like hair color and type. Suffice it to say that the article (and US culture in general) has one vision of a “typical” Indian person, especially an Indian woman, and one concept of the culture(s), both of which are extremely limited. Proof that even a “positive” race stereotype is still potentially harmful, damaging, and/or out and out wrong.

One interesting cultural side note, however: I took Latin for 6 semesters in HS, took Spanish for 4 semesters in college. I go to the UPenn Archaeology museum in Philly, and there is a fresco in the south Asian area dated to something like 2000 BCE depicting 7 goddesses/rulers (they weren’t sure) - the name of the figures phonetically started as “mad” or “mat” (I can’t recall the full word) and to my eyes, easily had mater or madre in the pronunciation. But a linguistic connection may be easier to prove than any ethnicity or origin.

Well, not so sure about why this piece focuses soley on the women, or why their is no mention of the ever fats growing Asian& Black pairings in this country. I myself amd fascinated by the culture of South Asians and follow Hindu religion… so I naturally find myself drawn to the men =-P I have dated many South Asian Indians and oddly enough have never gotten any strange looks from anyone… of and as far as the comment about the light skin… the majority of South Asians are considerably darker than other Asians (Chines, Japanese, & Korean). Heck every South Asian I have dated has been within one or two shades of me (darker or lighter) and I am a brownskin girl. Heck, I have seen many South Asians darker than many blacks so the whole comment about the lighter sin isn’t washing with me.

its amusing to read about straight haired, sharp featured Indian women being the next hot dish in the dating game — Im not sure whether I agree, but with a big round nose (which runs in the family) I’d say the stereotypes are amusing if nothing else! And I’m not sure if all the white men out there really want an Indian girl, or just any girl they can classify as ‘olive skinned and pretty’ - I’ve been asked a hundred times if I’m Spanish! But heck, if it makes people happy, I’d say party on and enjoy the stereotypes!!
