High school students air views on race
CVK
I recently came across the Web site for Youth Radio, an award winning nonprofit broadcast journalism training organization. There are a couple of commentaries on there from high school kids on the topics of interracial relationships and diversity on campus:
Diversity in College by Nora Harrington
“Everyone knows about the lawsuit against the University of Michigan. For me, the situation is personal. I’m mixed race and since I’ve started looking at colleges, I’ve started to realize how rare my surroundings have been. In my school there’s no one race that dominates. Berkeley High is only about 33 percent white… Most of the schools I’d be interested in applying to are at least 60 percent white…and having been in Berkeley my whole life, campuses like that would be really uncomfortable…”
Interracial Dating by Russell Owens
“I am a victim of patronizing eyes whenever I’m seen walking around with my girlfriend. But I still hope that we, as a society, are beginning to gradually accept interracial couples. There could only be one rationale as to why I speak so fervently about this topic: it is because I myself am African- American, and my girlfriend is Caucasian.”
