Another “changing face” story
JC
I am beginning to think that we should have a “Changing Face Watch” category given all of the recent stories that point to the acceptance of mixed people within their communities of color, and the recognition that the faces of these communities are changing (Miss Chinatown in LA, all of the Hines Ward stories :), etc.). This is a short mention of a new appointee to the California Asian Pacific Islander Legistlative Caucus. He is the new chairman and he is mixed.
Assemblyman Alberto Torrico, D-Newark, will be the new chairman of the six-member California Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. Torrico’s parents are immigrants from Bolivia and his mother is of Japanese descent. He said he is proud to serve as the first biracial chairman of the caucus.
“It is a reflection that members of the Legislature are beginning to look like the face of California today,” said Torrico, who also is the first person to be a member of both the API and Latino Legislative Caucus.
Good stuff!
But it’s interesting that it’s all very much focused within Asian communities…..
