New mixed memoir from former Scrubs writer
CVK
(Thanks to Shelisha and mtevc for this!) Back in January, our guest contributor Luke Lee ranted about the ridiculously over-the-top, Imitation of Life-style, tragic mulatto treatment that ABC’s 20/20 gave Angela Nissel’s story. Nissel is the author of the new memoir Mixed : My Life in Black and White.
Luckily, NPR is not quite so ham-handed and lets Nissel speak for herself. Check out this interview she did with Fresh Air, and the page also includes an excerpt from her book. She talks a lot during the interview about what it’s like to be the only black writer for the sitcom Scrubs, and what it’s like to write humor about race. The story of how she came to be a writer on the show is crazy… let’s just say it involved a random coincidence with eBay.

Brad, you’ve hit on why I love/hate the Star Trek universe. I know, I’m continuing the OT-ness. But, it’s about mixedness and media writing (sort of kind of on Tuesdays).
Every now and then the “utopian” scenario (which I question - the backgrounds are usually too shallow to qualify either way) of the ‘verse. I’ve analyzed the way ST treats those of mixed ancestry (funny how usually the human parent (if there is one) is white - even in the 25th c.). Unfortunately there are a lot of tragic mulattos in sci-fi.
They get props for having it, and no props for dealing with it.
Now, it all depends on whether these novels are canon or not. But really, it takes a lot for any scifi writer (or producer of any media) to get beyond TODAY’s standards in dealing with a imagined tomorrow.

Thank you much for this update- the last mention of MIXED was so negative with the 20/20 situation- a reader couldn’t tell you were critisizing the author or ABC- this update makes it clear-
Read the book! It’s great! Funny- moving, relatable.
