Mixed Latino student target of racial intimidation

CVK
Clint O'Neal & Jackie Zeigel (Thanks to Luke Lee for this!) Two white students (pictured) at Colorado University are charged with a hate crime against Greg Castro, a fellow CU student who is Latino and white. You can watch a video of the interview with Castro. He talks about being proud of his mixed heritage and how he doesn’t have the heart to tell his Mexican grandmother about this incident.

A police report said Zeigle and former CU football player Clint O’Neal, who are both white, sent the typo-filled message to Greg Castro, a Hispanic cross-country runner. It called Castro a “river rat” and “border hopper” and “bean eating peace of (expletive).” The message suggested O’Neal would drag Castro behind his car, an apparent reference to the 1998 dragging death in Texas of James Byrd Jr., a black man.

Apparently this is one of a string of racist incidents that have occurred in Boulder in the past year. A black student government leader received an e-mail last month that threatened her life. In February, those attending the Big 12 Conference on Black Student Affairs reported racist remarks, staring and poor service at an area restaurant. And a student of mixed heritage was assaulted during the spring semester as he walked near campus, breaking his jaw.

He was ordered to perform 40 hours of community service, work four days on the Boulder County Jail work crew, and send letters of apology to the victims, CU and the community… […]

She claims that Castro was harassing her so she retaliated by sending a racist death threat under her boyfriend’s name.
    Does that make sense?
This email is going to haunt them for a long time.
