Tiger defends his choice to identify as mixed

CVK
tiger woods 60 minutes(Thanks to Terence for this!) 60 Minutes recently profiled Tiger Woods and in one segment of the show, asked him about the whole Cablinasian thing. You can watch the video here, but he basically says the same thing he said on Oprah many years back. That he sees himself as a product of both his parents, and that if he were to pigeonhole himself as only African-American, it would be an insult to his Thai mother.

Actually now that I’m looking around the Web, I don’t think this clip was included in the version that was broadcasted. The transcript of the original show is here, and I don’t see this segment there. In any case, it’s Tiger talking about race, which has been a rarity ever since he was slammed for “running from his blackness” after the Oprah show.

He took a tough stand, but it’s the right one. If we all could stop identifying our selve primarily as the color of our skin or country of origin, think of how much work we’d get done! :)

Tiger is so boring, but good for him for sticking to his guns.

Ha ha! My mother was just saying the same thing about Tiger…how boring he is. Makes me wonder what his wife sees in him…oh yeah…money!!

It’s nice to see Tiger finally take a stand on something.

At this point, why is Tiger still talking about his racial identification. No matter what he identifies himself as , the World, because of U.S. standards see him as a black man, and one that doesn’t want to be black, and thus look down on him. He spends his whole career trying so hard to say other. He’s a golfer an athlete, not an anthropologist. So he should get over. Maybe, Tiger should go to a Klan rally or to Australia or to a Nazi rally and ask them what color he is. I’m assuming they will call him a Nigga and throw more insults at him. My mother being a multiracial person looked more Asian than Tiger Woods, yet she always told me, that the world see her and myself as black women. We can list the other races until the sky falls, to the world, if you are a nigger , you are a nigger, and trying to escape from that, is ridiculus. Tiger needs to focus on being called a good human being instead of bi-racial.

My mother always said, “It’s bad enough to be who you are, let alone, be who you ain’t”. in other words, you have enough baggage and a hard time being known as black, why in the world would you try to be something you know for a fact, you can’t be.
