Mixed people will fix racism, right?

atreyuOh boy. I’m starting to think that in addition to our “Exotic Watch,” we may need to start a new section of MMW–a “Utopia Watch.” This is something we’ve discussed a lot on MMW and on Addicted to Race. Many people seem to believe that just as Atreyu was the only one in The Neverending Story who could save Fantasia from certain destruction, mixed race people are the only ones who can rid the world of racism–and they can accomplish it simply by being born.

(For more on this, check out this interview with Eric Hamako and this article by Claire Light.)

Now, usually these ideas come up in very subtle ways. But not so with this article about the 50th anniversary of the NAACP chapter in Fremont, OH. Check out the last two paragraphs:

Dr. Nkenge Jackson, an obstetrician, said she came to Fremont because of the community fostered by its NAACP chapter. Even with the enduring subtleties of racial differences, she sees hope in the increasing number of biracial babies.

“Maybe the young people will solve the race problem in Fremont,” she said.

Oh right, sure, we’ll take care of it. Leave it to us. No sweat.
