New play satirizes race and class collisions

CVK
offsrpingA new play titled “Offspring” is running this month and it sounds fascinating! It’s a production of the Negro Ensemble Company at the 45th Street Theater and is written by Jimmy Barden. Here’s what The New York Times had to say:

Grace (Janice Marie) and her brother Walker (Brad Holbrook) run a charitable foundation created by their rich, liberal parents to help African-Americans. While Walker remains slightly repelled by the people he serves, Grace flaunts her benevolence, insensible to its increasingly predatory edge. As she nears the end of her child-bearing years, she is consumed with the desire to give birth to a biracial child who will take control of her family’s fortune and usher in a new era of “multiracial masters of the universe.” In search of a sperm donor at Manhattan Cryobank, she is counseled by the articulate, sexy, angry young Kyle (Hisham Tawfiq, who is also a New York City firefighter). Tossing aside the files, she decides Kyle is the perfect father for her child.

“Multiracial masters of the universe?” Ah… it’s more of the mixed-people-will-save-the-world crap that we’ve discussed on Addicted to Race recently. (Check out our interviews with Claire Light and Eric Hamako if you’re interested in learning more.)
