addicted to race logoA brand-new episode of Addicted to Race is out! If you haven’t already, please subscribe to our podcast in iTunes. Click here to launch iTunes and subscribe today, it’s absolutely free. Here’s a rundown of episode 18:

RANT:
The sensationalism surrounding the recently born U.K. twins (”one black! one white!”) and the upcoming race-swapping reality show Black. White are the subjects of our guest rant from Dr. Joseph L. Graves, pre-eminent evolutionary biologist and author of The Race Myth: Why We Pretend Race Exists in America.

MIXED MEDIA WATCH NEWS UPDATE:
Carmen discusses the recent trend of going undercover to “expose” prejudice against various marginalized groups (e.g. Tyra Banks in the fatsuit). She also discusses a recent Wired magazine cover story on Keanu Reeves, and wonders if his racially ambiguous look can explain why he has been cast in so many interesting sci fi films (a.k.a. mixed=futuristic). Finally, she discusses a recent article about former Miss Universe Brook Lee who is resisting pressure to “pass” as Latina or white and audition for non-Asian roles. Should actors just go for the roles they can get? Or do they have a responsibility to portray characters that reflect their ethnic heritage?

GUEST COMMENTARY FROM CLAIRE LIGHT:
Claire Light discusses why we need to challenge the idealized notions of mixed race identity that are so prevalent. You know, ideas like “mixed people will bring about the end of racism.” Check out her article The Multiracial Dream on Pop + Politics. You can read more of her work on Other Magazine’s staff blog, as well as Claire’s personal blog at clairelight.typepad.com.

INTERVIEW WITH ALICE SANDOSHARAJ
Jen interviews Alice Sandosharaj, professor of American Studies at the University of Maryland about the concept of the model minority and how it impacts Asian-Americans and African-Americans. Who benefits from the model minority myth and who is unfairly victimized by it? Prof. Sandosharaj posits that the discussion of privilege should extend beyond white privilege.

Your discussion with Alice Sandosharaj was excellent!!!! She hit the most uncomfortable aspect of privilege, not just that people suffer, but THAT PEOPLE BENEFIT (& tacitly enjoy) the opportunies and POWER that privilege brings. The greatest privilege that MMM confers is that of high expectations. I think Ms. Sandoshraj did a good job of explaining structural and institutionalized racism to those who don’t understand it. Ms. Sandoshraj’s discussion of her background and how class was NOT the determinant of opportunities and her success and how RACE continues to be the problem emphasizes how far we will go to deny a problem. I do not deny that class issues exist accross the board, but class is used by many people to escape dealing with racial issues.

Her discussion on the term Model Minority implication that there is a defective, problem minority sums that privilege up in a nutshell. My question is this, as confining as the MMM is for Asian-Americans, who is REALLY going to give up privilege and power???

I look forward to hearing more from her.

Another great show. Your guests were very interesting and they packed a lot of information in their interviews. I especially loved the comment about reading because it is so important to everything and sadly overlooked by many. I also liked the blog point/counterpoint you did at the end of the show. It was almost as good as a live debate! Great length too, those short episodes are such a tease! After listening to your show, I went home and read “Kindred” again. What a great book by a great writer. Octavia Butler will be sorely missed. Thanks.
