Love makes a family on Grey’s Anatomy

Another great example of a neutral depiction of a mixed family! While the show is cheesy or chock full of drama at times, I have to say that their handling of mixed families and interracial relationships continues to be refreshing! Rebecca Sweet, a new MMW contributor, gives her take!

Already known for its diverse cast and interracial relationships, in last night’s episode Grey’s Anatomy one of the patients was a transracially adopted son of a gay male couple. I have to say the scenes were refreshing because the family was portrayed they same as any other family coming through that hospital and the son was portrayed to have a healthy relationship with his dads. And did I mention how cute the entire family was? And how cute the son was when he said, “Dads, it’s going to be okay,” as the dads are both freaking out over the son’s head trauma. So awesome. What a great example of a family. Should ABC be worried about conservative backlash? Hopefully not because (sadly) in America, television really does have an influence on the way people think and what people are exposed to, and hopefully “Johnny and Sue American” out there who maybe don’t live in a progressive city will have an opportunity for thoughtful open-minded discussion. Or maybe this is too optimistic? Either way, keep it coming! There should be more shows out there like Grey’s Anatomy.
JC again: Actually, we are assuming that the child was transracially adopted. They never said for sure. It’s possible that the child was the biological child of one of the men — he looked mixed…anyway, the point is that it wasn’t spelled out and they didn’t hit us over the head with it. This was a family, no questions asked.

I saw the episode and I thought it — along with all the relationships in the show– was handled with grace and dignity. Grey’s Anatomy never comes with the spotlight and the blinking signs and arrows to say “look! it’s a non-traditional pairing (or family)! Everybody gasp and look at the freaks!” it’s a very tasteful diverse program.
Hope it stays on the air. ABC has a bad habit of cancelling everything I ever liked. (Twin Peaks, My So-Called Life, Relativity)

FYI…heard an interview with the show’s creator and lead writer/exec producer (an African-American woman) and she demands color-blind casting of all roles…
