SI swimsuit model says Asian side=being quiet

LL
Aline Nakashima
In the latest 2006 Sports Illustrated special swimsuit edition, one of the highlighted “Rookies” is 24 year old Aline Nakashima. The model from Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil says:

“YOU CAN’T CLASSIFY ME BECAUSE…I’m half Brazilian and half Japanese. I have the whole Brazilian thing down–I like to party–but I have an Asian side, so I sometimes like being quiet and having time of my own.”

I haven’t heard this one in a while but its important because not only is she saying that she can “switch” between the two but also that according to her, if you’re any sort of “Asian,” that means you’re going to be quiet and not party. Vomit out of my mouth. Now, I don’t know about the whole “switching” thing because God knows people can act and identify and react however they want dependent on their self-identification and environment or whatever, but come on, you’re saying that specific to stereotypical characteristics in one of the most popular magazine issues to hit newsstands ever read predominantly by males…

You’ve got your Brazilian side “down”? Oh of course! Well, guess what, what if I’m dating a Black woman and i’ve got the whole Black people thing “down.” I just add in a bunch of “y’alls” and “MmmmHmmms,” yea, that’s the ticket.

Also, I think it’s funny that out of all the possible shots and jewelry type accessories for her “swimsuit” [Note: In the printed version, Aline is dons a Lei] they chose a Lei for her to wear…THE WRONG WAY I might add.”

[note: the online version is a little different than the print one where i’m getting the text from]

haha… well i guess this is a good reminder that just being multiracial doesn’t guarantee immunity to thinking in terms of racial stereotypes.

“sometimes i like to party, but other times i like to be by myself.” wow, that sounds just like… everyone i know!

Whats even stranger is that most Brasilians I know will fervently refer to themselves as “Brasilian” with cornered with the “what are you” question. Seems she’s missing the boat on a couple of fronts here.

Yeah… this article should be used as defense the next time someone claims that “mixed people CAN”T be prejudiced.”

She may be misquoted, or maybe (likely) English is her second language. It’s also SI, which wouldn’t be the first mag to make up a quote or two.

What a friggin’ loser! This is what I hate about certain hapas. They brag about being hapa (”Oh boy! Bet you can’t tell what race I am!! That’s because I’m hapa and exotic and beautiful! In your face, full-blooded people!”) Yet they stupidly talk about themselves SO stereotypically. I can’t believe they published that.

I don’t like the fact that she is saying. Man, there’s got to be another way to say it than that. She’s a beautiful gal but man have some respect. I’m just offended when she said that “I have that asian side” .. you know the quiet side.. uh not all of us is quiet! that is just sooo stereotypical!
