dna tests

Those DNA test enthusiasts out there can now take their passion one step further. Not only can you find out your “racial heritage” with DNA tests, now you can proudly hang your results up on a wall! From DesignSponge (which by the way is a really cool blog if you’re into modern home design):

do you think your dna is work of art? well, dna11 does. this ontario based studio creates unique dna portraits through a combination of science and art. the process starts with a simple, non-invasive technique: depositing your saliva into a tube. dna11 then takes your sample to a certified laboratory, where the dna is extracted to create a unique genetic fingerprint. the end result is a group of different sized pieces of dna which dna11 “runs” on a gel and stains with a fluorescent dye and illuminates with UV light. then a special camera captures the image which is then digitally enhanced, cropped and color adjusted. each piece is then printed as a giclee fine art piece on an acid free polyester-cotton canvas, using pigmented inks designed to resist fading. it is then sealed with a non-yellowing protective varnish to further prolong the print life. i think it’s a fun idea, but what about you guys? creepy or cool?

The photo is really pretty and I guess it’s great for healthy people…

It would kind of suck for someone to do this, and then later on be able to go, “Oh, and THIS is why I have XYZ disease.”

Then again, I’d love to see people add color, shadow images of their favorite cartoon character… kind of a play on the individuality of DNA, and a reminder to not take DNA too seriously or as gospel.

    Lyonside,

Thanks for your comments. One important note. The DNA fingerprint does not reveal any genetic defects or any specific genetic data that can be analyzed by anyone. It is however generated from your DNA sample and makes for a truly unique genetic portrait. No two pieces will ever look the same.

    All the best,

Nice art, but way too expensive. There’s an alternative that offers
you highest quality, lowest prices and maximum flexibility. The
company Geneportrait creates beautiful and scientifically-solid genetic portraits from a sample of your own
DNA. They can include multiple individuals (people/pets) in one
single portrait which makes the experience much less expensive and
more meaningful: You can directly compare your fingerprint with
your loved ones’, generating both a unique sense of closeness and
individuality. The artwork is delivered on CD giving you total
freedom of choice to handle your work of art and save money in
overall costs. Furthermore, you will preserve your DNA-art portrait
    for a lifetime.

We can include up to 50 subjects in one single portrait. Prices are as low as 60 Euro per subject (DNA portrait with 5 or more subjects).

By the way…I know we just made a cheap copy of DNA 11, but I don’t care! I’m going to get rich rich rich off you suckers! ;-)…I’m here for a good time, not a long time!

It seems DNA11 claims they are the original stuff. That isn’t true.

There are several companies that create DNA portraits, each one with its own style and aesthetics. Of these, http://www.perfectdna.com is the oldest (dates back to 2002)
