A Primer on How to Offend an Asian Adoptee in Conversation:

* Use words like “lucky” and “grateful” in your dialogue.
* Compare all aspects of his or her birth culture to your collection of samurai swords or chinoiserie, your vast knowledge of “Far Eastern” history, or your recent screening of “Memoirs of a Geisha.”
* Mention that your cousin’s neighbor’s best friends just adopted an adorable little China doll, and ask if the adoptee would like to meet them.
* Ask the adoptee personal questons about his or her intent to seek out his/her “natural” or “real” parents.
* In discussing any travel the adoptee has done to his or her birth country, describe everything as “fascinating” and “exotic.”
* For enhanced effect, combine any of the above methods with usage of the outmoded term “Oriental.”
