Interracial love story on WB’s Supernatural

MC (a new MMW contributor!)
supernaturalThere was a really great episode of Supernatural on the WB,where one of the brothers (I think it was Jensen Ackles of Days of Our Lives fame) goes back to an Ohio town to solve the mystery death of his old flame’s father. His old flame turns out to be a girl with a white mom and a black dad and the issue covered some issues about racial injustice past and present.

Instead of being a typical “black history episode” (in the vein of the Chinatown episode”) the show was really well done and the avoided most offensive land mines. And the best part was Jensen Ackles and his love, while aware of their differences and the evils of this country’s racial history, the two managed to relate to each other on a human level. Sans ‘jungle fever’ overtones and sans being totally chaste. (They really got it on in an exceptionally hot love scene!)

It was so good that I saved it on my DVR. It made me think just so crazy how often the sci-fi, horror, fantasy genre tends to get these issues right.

Absolutely. Star Trek next gen, deep space, all the later stuff tackles a TON of issues with incredible tact. They talk about TRAdoption, mixed race issues, exoticism issues, “othering” issues, its so good.

“So is it true what they say about half-klingon girls [in bed]!?”

Or even just that bovine Klingon guy, what’s his face. Wasn’t he TRA? And then he had to “prove” himself wothy of being a real klingon by doing that sword death match???

I made a list a few years ago… but I stopped watching the franchise at Voyager..

Spock: 1/2 alien and 1/2 human, so bi”species”
Worf: Full alien, TRA by humans
Kaylar (or whatever): 1/2 alien, 1/2 human, IDs more as a human
Alexander: Worf’s kid by Kaylar, about 1/4 human 3/4 alien, but has problems fitting in and overcompensates
    Troi: 1/2 human, 1/2 alien
Odo: you could argue TRA, or you could argue foster care/adoptive kid finding their bioparents and digging up dirt in the process
    Dax: borderline transgender issues
*insert name here - I can’t recall* :a 1/2 alien species #1/ 1/2 alien species #2 - her beef was that her father was a totalitarian dictator in charge of a planet, and her mother was one of the oppressed folk of that planet
    Torres: 1/2 human, 1/2 alien

And there are more… actually, the interesting thing for me is that up until Torres, all the “1/2 human” people…. well, their parents appeared to be phenotypically European. It took until the 3rd spinoff to get a modern minority human into the interspecies gene pool.

But really, the Trek series had a lot of “tragic mulattos” running around for a while. I don’t dare give them too much cred.

I was a cool episode. I wasn’t weird it was just two people in love with each other.
