Hot 97 DJ Miss Jones defends her racist statements
CVK
New York hip hop station Hot 97’s DJ Miss Jones got herself into hot water AGAIN a few weeks back during the Transit strike that took place in NYC, when she called TWU president Roger Toussaint a “dumb coconut who probably don’t even have a green card.” She also enacted a skit where he was toted away back to a boat headed for Trinidad for being an illegal immigrant.
(This is the same Miss Jones who came under fire around this time last year for creating a skit mocking Tsunami victims. In the parody she called the victims “chinks” and said that their children would be sold into child slavery.)
Not surprisingly, she’s come under fire from the Caribean-American community in NYC and finally this morning she addressed the issue. (Okay I was half-asleep when I heard it, so forgive me if some of my facts are off.) Basically it was a non-apology, and she even resorted to our favorite rebuttal. Literally, she said something along the lines of, “How can I be racist against Caribbeans when I married a Haitian man and have a Haitian baby?”
UPDATE: By the way, Miss Jones should probably check out Nah Right’s list of the 10 Most Influential Caribbeans in Hip Hop. Among the luminaries: Kool DJ Herc, Grand Master Flash, Notorious B.I.G., Wyclef Jean, Luke, Doug E Fresh, Foxy Brown, Fat Joe, Princ Markie Dee (Fat Boys), and Busta Rhymes.

I don’t think this is racism. I’ve never heard “Carribean” considered a race, and certainly not one that is separated from the one that Miss Jones appears likely to identify with. Racism is a convenient word, but this has a lot more to do with national origin than with race. National-origin-ism? I’d call it ethnocentrism, but that is predicated on my (subjective) belief that they are of different ethnicities…

Race isn’t real, but ethnicity I thought was real: usually defined as a combination of national/regional origin, and common language/customs (including religon, food, attitudes, perspectives, etc.)
That said, I do see her comments as 1) prejudiced, 2) stereotyped, 3) ignorant, and 4) ethnically motivated. In Philly recently, a recent West African immigrant teen was attacked by African-American teens in a tough urban neighborhood. After some intial thought that the kid was attacked because he may have ratted on drug-dealing classmates, the evidence seems to be ethnic prejudice.
Seems that in some predominantly black communities, the West African immigrants are resented for “getting ahead” of African-Americans, and are seen as taking “all the jobs” and “all the housing.” Sound familiar?
Ethnic bias is ethnic bias - problem is that the media is so into “race” that it doesn’t usually know what ELSE to call it if the skin tones happen to be similar.

Take Black men who go after White women just because they “do things Black women don’t do”, or White men who date Asian women because they “are exotic”, or any of the above dating Black men because of their “big …” I believe that when your basis for dating/marrying/sleeping with someone comes as the result of a physical fetish, then those racist tendencies toward the race you’re sleeping with can still exist. Sleeping with the enemy, if you will. The assumption that an association with another race absolves you of any responsibility for being racist is absolutely ridiculous, and I’m tired of hearing excuses like Jones’.
Any of you watch The Boondocks? It’s like when Ruckus says so many bad things about Blacks while at the same time being a Black male. You can hate your own race or color. They need to fire that idiot and put future issues that WILL come up to rest.

Anyway, I’m so, so, so happy this didn’t go away completely. I was listening to her that morning, and I couldn’t believe my ears. I tried calling in to confront her, but couldn’t get through.
Glad to see I wasn’t the only one deeply offended by that.
And no, her comments weren’t necessarily racist. I agree with the poster that noted America’s love for the word, “racist.” I definitely thought it was an ethnocentric, jingoistic outbreak. But never did I think that her being married to a Haitian was of any relevance.

Now, also keep in mind that nearly 300,000 died in the tsunami, compared to ~1000 in Katrina…and THEN tell me who got “carried away?” Typical American apologetic defense for Black offenders and dismissive attitude towards Asian victims…both in these cataclysms and this abhorrently insulting racist skit.
This racist non-accountable attitude is why Miss Jones is still ON AIR today - because she’s BLACK! And Americans have been programmed to think that only Whites can be racist. Now, THAT’S racism! Cuz, if Miss Jones was WHITE - you think she’d still be spewing her racist hate speech on air today?

Some people would even argue that what happened with Katrina was WORSE in a sense because it happened in the so-called “civilized” US and there should have been some plan in place so people wouldn’t be stranded on top of their homes or in sporting arenas, or dying in the streets, or the 300 elderly Vietamese people who were stuck in a church on the second floor with water to their waists who lucked out, had a working phone, and kept calling for help that never came.
Also a lot of Blacks thought that the Tsunami song was bullshit, uncalled for and racist, and a lot of “Urban” stations had a lot to say about that, as well as that smart-mouth Miss Jones. Just wanted to point that out, because I don’t think you realize that while making your own generalizations.

Right, cuz SE Asia is “uncivilized” and full of “dumb coconuts who probably don’t even have a green card?” Therefore, ~300,000 of them “should” have died.
It would be different if the tsunami had hit a “civilized” country and 1000 people had died, though. That would have been “WORSE.”

Way to go putting words in my mouth, sweetie! Show me where I said that “all of Asia was “uncivilized,” called someone a coconut, or where I stated that “300,000 people should have died.” Did the areas where the Tsunami hit have the infrastructure, resources, military forces, planes and other things that would have helped out in the early stages, made the survivors more comfortable, even found people quicker so some of them need not have died? No, they didn’t, but the US did and should have had that available to New Orleans. Furthermore, the Tsunami came out of nowhere with no advance warning, while the situation about the levees was well-known for DECADES and the US basically sat on its ass and did nothing. There should have been some sort of preparation, especially after years of warning about the levees, and it’s not just me that said America dropped the ball; other countries like Germany, the UK and Australia also expressed belief that such a thing could happen in America. Are you going to jump on their nuts as well?
People died at both places. It’s not a pissing match.
By the way, I also said “Some people would argue” not “this is what I think.” Furthermore, I donated money and materials to both the Tsunami and Katrina victims, WTF did YOU do? Did you give not caring what group got your money, household items and toiletries as long as someone was helped? Or did you do what some did and earmarked your donations to help certain communities and not others?
I don’t have a beef with you, dude. I just don’t like someone deliberately twisting my words to fit their own perceptions and calling me a racist to boot. I thought we were talking about how crazy Ms Jones is and how she needs to get her ass off the air and how her station condones her actions, not ripping each other.

Homie, shut the fuck up. I never defended Jones’ bullshit. I simply was a little taken aback by your “nigg*rs and welfare dumpster babies” line. Maybe you were just eager to prove your point, but it definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. Also, maybe I didn’t state my point clearly, ’cause on reading that post again, even I found it surprisingly incoherent.
Still, whatever the cause, I really wasn’t comfortable with the ease with which you jumped into that racist diatribe (or more importantly, THE EXTENT TO WHICH YOU TOOK IT). The Tsunami Song’s aftermath saw an army of white and Asian people who felt absolutely justified in making racist, inflammatory statements about blacks. So I feel no guilt in keeping an eye out for it this time.

What you’re actually saying is that Howard Stern is safe from public criticism because “he’s technically Jewish”… do you hear how funny that sounds?
Footnote,
“…even (Stern) doesn’t stoop to using racial slurs”
You’re wrong. For the first 20 years of his on-air career, Stern usually referred to Asians as ‘chinks’ & ‘chinaman’.
While all races were fair game, Stern (personally) only used slurs about asians and gays. For example: if Stern mocked a black or latino guy, he would do so without using racial slurs- because that would be ‘racist’. But he freely mocked asians while calling them ‘chinks’.
In the 90’s, Stern sought mainstream success and morphed his humor as parody. Maybe he changed alittle, too. (But if it matters, I do remember Stern interviewing a teenaged Michelle Kwan. He called her a hot chink, she was actually flattered.)

I stand corrected, then.
Again, the reasons why he got away with it are:
1) While other racial slurs are completely off-limits, marginalized Asians get no respect in this country and so are easy targets. “Chink” is thus ok, while “n*gger” is not.
2) Stern is Jewish - a sacred cow in this country where any criticism of will be unilaterally deflected as “anti-Semitism.”
3) Self-hating sellout whores like Michelle Kwan only enable such behavior when they doth not protest - but actively encourage it. Unfortunately, there are many, many more of these over-assimilating White-wannabes amongst Asian-Americans than other minorities.
