Rain reminisces about her dad

Rain speaks with SignOn San Diego about her dad, Richard Pryor.

This year, the moments that hung deepest were spent midday with Rain Pryor, Richard’s daughter, in the darkened showroom of the venerable Comedy Store on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. It was there that her dad honed the material that turned him into the funniest man alive.

Rain Pryor, 35, had a difficult life growing up biracial with a man who neglected her and a mother who protected her. Her one-woman show, “Fried Chicken & Latkes,” and her stand-up act explored that lengthy, costly turmoil.

In conversation, she spoke touchingly of this imperfect man, her dad. “It’s a father-daughter relationship,” she said. “It’s your dad. It’s your first love whether he was around or not. When he gave you the time, you cherished it. There’s that little girl in me that still wants to embrace daddy.”

Rain Pryor loved him, and I loved the fact she felt open enough to bare that so I could share it with you. She took me (and you) into her heart.

Does marriage hurt black women? Or marriage to black men? …and their kids?

No, in this particular case, it’s drugs, not marriage.
