Lotsa mixed/IR stuff on TV lately
CVK
Spoiler alert. Just some quick notes on a few shows I watched this week that had some interracial or mixed themes…
Nip/Tuck: The son (pictured) has been dating this girl who is a fervent white supremacist and so is the rest of her family. In this week’s episode, she tries to bleach her skin because she found out her great great grandmother was black, and she’s afraid her father will disown her if he finds out.
Girlfriends: Pretty much the entire episode was about whether or not Toni would raise her baby (the father is white and Jewish) Christian or Jewish. They milked it for laughs of course, but I thought it was interesting because we don’t often hear African-Americans articulate their views on religion in such a straight-forward and detailed way.
Bones: They uncover the body of a man who was murdered in the 1950s. As they uncover more evidence, they realize he was a white man whose black girlfriend became pregnant. He had been planning to move to Paris with her but was murdered before he could, and she was left wondering for the rest of her life what happened.
Numb3rs: By now we’re familiar with the old “Chinatown episode” - I guess this was the token “Native American” episode. A Indian chief has a security guard to murder a scientist who just discovered a skull that would invalidate that tribe’s claim to their reservation–and casino revenues. Why did the security guard do it? Because his mother was half Indian (sorry forgot the name of the tribe in the episode) but they declassified her as such, thus nulling the son’s claim to any casino money.

After all, it must be difficult to crank out script after script about plastic surgery. I suppose this must seem ‘edgy’ to the five people who still watch this show.
