Kids book features mixed family as just another family

hait today, gone tomorror (cover)I came across a press release on PRWeb for a kids book that actually came out a year ago, but is being promoted for the holiday season. Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow presents a story about a family that includes white dad, black mom, and mixed daughter, and they are just another family. The story doesn’t focus on race and the fact that they are an interracial family — it’s about a trip to the hair salon and the little girl wanting to give her bald father a new hairdo! How’s that for a neutral depiction!?! :) The author, Lisa Dunn-Dern has a mixed family herself:

“I wanted to walk into the children’s section of a bookstore and find a book with a family that looks like mine,” says Dunn-Dern, who is African American and happily married to a prominent Hollywood entertainment attorney who happens to be Caucasian. They have one daughter, now 13, and make their home in Los Angeles, Calif., and Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. “I didn’t find any, so I wrote one,” she says cheerfully.
