MIXED MEDIA WATCH NEWS UPDATE:
Jen shares the latest and greatest from Mixed Media Watch. An article about Nicole Scherzinger, lead singer of girl group The Pussycat Dolls, prompts us to launch a new section of the blog dedicated to tracking the number of times a mixed person is described as “exotic.” What’s wrong with the term? Jen breaks it down.
ASK NEW DEMOGRAPHIC
Jen and Carmen discuss the feedback they received in response to their monthly Ask New Demographic advice column. An Asian woman married to a white man feels that her girlfriend’s (also Asian) insistence on dating only Asian guys is a subtle critique of her interracial relationship. Did we completely miss the mark with our answer?
INTERVIEW WITH SCOTT POULSON-BRYANT
Carmen interviews Scott Poulson-Bryant, author of a new book titled Hung: A Meditation on the Measure of Black Men in America. The title “hung” is a double entendre, referring not only to penis size but also to the fact that black men were once literally hung from trees, often for their perceived sexual prowess and the supposed risk it posed to white women. As this book demonstrates, the sexualization of black men is inextricably intertwined with the oppression of black men.
Here’s a look at the next episode:
1) Jen will rant about the obsession with classifying and categorizing mixed people.
2) Mixed Media Watch news round-up.
3) Jen and Carmen face off in a heated debate! Tune in to find out what the controversy is all about.
4) Carmen interviews Robert Jensen, author of a new book titled The Heart of Whiteness: Confronting Race, Racism and White Privilege.

Hung sounds like an interesting approach to racial stereotypes, and how they are so often rife with hypocrisy, cultural myths and double-standards.
1) If size “doesn’t matter,” then why are Black men so worshipped for their “larger” members and proud of it?
2) There is a double-standard when a race rejects only the negative stereotypes but embraces the positive ones. When was the last time Jesse Jackson griped about media portrayals of Black men as hung sex gods? Are any Black pundits protesting Usher’s “In The Mix” which portrays him as a multiracial sex fantasy? http://www.empiremovies.com/images/posters/in-the-mix.jpg
Isn’t racism the hyperbolization of and reductionism to ALL stereotypes - not just the bad ones? And again, having a big one is still considered “positive,” even though “size doesn’t matter?”
3) So, those who got it, flaunt it - and those who don’t, try to discredit it? This sounds suspiciously similar to the US feminist movement. If women are reduced to sex toys and valued for their beauty - then hotties will benefit from this while the totally devalued ugly ones will then rebel against it. Hence, most prominent feminists were less-than-attractive. Similarly, if Black men are also reduced to sex toys, then those who don’t “measure up” may feel totally worthless and thus also rebel against it - while those who do - will still reap the racist rewards.
Let’s face it, in the end we’re all self-serving and ideological consistency will always take a backseat to self-gain. 99% of all activism ultimately all boils down to…meism.
