The New York Times Vikram Seth’s new book, Two Lives. It’s the story of his uncle Shanti Behari Seth who married a Jewish woman who fled Hitler’s Germany for England:
Some of Mr. Seth’s most moving pages are devoted to Shanti Uncle’s long, painful struggle to establish a dental practice, and the gradual evolution of his friendship with Henny. “She knew she had nobody, and I had nobody,” Shanti Uncle told the author. Theirs was a marriage based not on passion but on shared memories, mutual respect and deep affection. It lasted a lifetime.
