The Richmond Times Dispatch ran an article about Iman’s new contribution to the world of beauty, The Beauty of Color: The Ultimate Beauty Guide for Skin of Color. We told you about her line of cosmetics for women of color in a previous article. Putting products and resources out there for women of color seems to be extremely important for her — it seems that she gets an extra push to do this work since she a mom to two daughters who don’t necessarily see themselves reflected as examples of beauty in our society.

While the makeup tips and the women profiled are likely to appeal to an older audience, Iman kept younger women in mind when she wrote it. She says she wants girls to see how beautiful different faces, different skins and different features can be before they’ve been taught not to like their looks or the looks of others because of race or stereotype.

Magazines, in particular, do a poor job of showing diversity, according to Iman, but advertisements and fashion shows also don’t reflect the population. On fashion runways, there are one or two black models, but Asians are even rarer and the Hispanic models all seem to be Brazilian, who tend to have lighter eyes and skin than women from other South and Central American countries.

Iman has two daughters: Younger daughter Alexandria with husband David Bowie is biracial, and 27-year-old Zulekha with first husband Spencer Haywood is black.

“We talk about global-this and global-that, but this is the first book to celebrate women from Harlem to New Delhi,” she says.
