Ask New Demographic: How can I avoid “selling out” now that I’m in an interracial relationship?
JC & CVK
The other question we answer in this month’s New Demographic newsletter comes from a young man in an interracial relationship, who fears that slowly but surely, he’s losing his sense of identity and may be on the road to “selling out.” Read our answer here:
Q: I am African, my girlfriend is white. We are becoming more serious and I have concerns about our relationship. We love each other and get along very well, but I have a hard time feeling comfortable when I am with her white family and friends. I feel as though there is not much that I have in common with them, and I find myself shifting and changing in order to make them more comfortable with me–and to make myself more comfortable in the situation. I feel that it’s easier to just give way to them, but I am scared that I am selling out. Am I going to give up or lose my own culture if I continue to be in this relationship?
