New mixed campus group in St. Louis!
JC
College Publisher Network featured a piece on The Mixed Club, a new campus organization for mixed students at Washington University in St. Louis. The group hopes to bring about more understanding and visibility on campus. Good luck to the students of the Mixed Club!
White added that there is a lack of awareness on campus about mixed races. She said students had a tendency to see their racially mixed peers as belonging to only one racial group.
“People looking for a cultural group but who don’t feel totally comfortable in the groups that exist on campus should feel welcome in our group,” White said. “People should not belittle the racial experience of mixed race people. I might not be a ‘minority’ or fully ‘of color,’ but neither am I white. White people often see what they feel comfortable seeing in me. What people should do is listen and be willing to openly discuss mixed race people’s experiences. Don’t see what you want to see…let us speak for ourselves.”

I hope to see more and more progress in this direction. I am a black South African and my husband a white American and we have wonderful triplets. I worry about where they will seek and find their identity as questions of their race and culture already come up and their only 8 months old. They will be asked this all their lives regardless of whether they live in the US or South Africa.

Fez, I hope you and your family will consider joining mulatto.org. We have an active message board filled with people who identify with or support the identities of people who are mixed with european and african, black and white.
