Living on the cusp in Canada

JC
living on the cuspThe Calgary Sun reports on a film about mixed identity that screened at the 2005 Calgary International Film Festival. Living on the Cusp took a look at “hyphenated-Canadians.”

Nakagawa looks at seven different subjects in her film, whose approach to their heritage is as diverse as their backgrounds. One of Nakagawa’s subjects is Fred Wah, whose father was half-Chinese and whose mother was Swedish. Nakagawa’s own ancestry is a mix of Japanese, Irish and German.

“If I go abroad and tell someone I’m Canadian,” she says, “a lot of people don’t accept that. They want to know where my grandparents or my great-grandparents are from. People of European descent don’t usually get that. The thing is, I don’t feel very Japanese. I’m Canadian. Isn’t that enough?”
