Jeter not worried by hate mail

The racist letter-writer strikes again…this time Derek Jeter is the target. This has been going on for several months now, with the last report from us in January. Well, it continues, but Jeter, who is known to date white women, says he is hardly fazed by the letter that he got a few months ago. MLB.com reports.
The Daily News report said that the letter called Jeter a “traitor to his race” for dating white women, and a law enforcement source told the paper that it warned Jeter to “stop or he’ll be shot or set on fire.”
Jeter insisted Monday that he never gave the incident a second thought, and he was curious why this suddenly became an issue. “It wasn’t a threat,” Jeter said. “It wasn’t, ‘I’m going to do this or that to you.’ It was just a stupid letter. I’ve gotten stupid letters before. That’s basically it. Now, for some reason, it’s on the front page and it’s some big, huge story.”

Jane, oftentimes racists look to the “dark side,” i.e., they label a bi-racial person like Jeter as “black” because according to their reasoning, and historically this is reflected in the social policies of the U.S., any person who has a percentage of black ancestry, even a very small one, has been considered black, regardless of all other ancestry. If you take this one step further, because the letter-writer perceives Jeter as black and discounts his Caucasian background, he/she maintains that Jeter should dating black women, and doing otherwise makes him a “traitor.”
As a side-note, Jeter takes after his mother, as many children do, because certain genetic traits are X-linked. This means that if the gene is located on the part of the X chromosome that is missing in its complementing Y chromosome, the mother’s genetic trait dominates. So, if skin tone for a particular (mixed race) male individual is X-linked, then they would have a skin tone that appears closer to their white mother’s than their black father’s, as in Jeter’s case.
Conversely, a mixed race person could have a skin tone more like their black mother’s than their white father’s. A mixed-race person could fall elsewhere on the spectrum of skin pigmentation, especially if female. Lastly, the genetic code is quite complex, and since more than one pair of genes affect skin color, children of interracial marriages, even children of the same two parents, can have a wide range of color.

Choosing partners is another complicated issue, but many schools of thought in psychology point to boys choosing partners who resemble their mothers, and girls choosing partners who resemble their fathers, in some way whether physical, intellectual, emotional, etc. So, some have accused Jeter of “preferring” white women, but it stands to reason that he would, since his mother is white also. (This doesn’t explain Tiger Woods’ choice of a wife, however!)
Lastly: Several media outlets, (Yes, Lyonside, I know the Media Are Sheep) including USA Today, have reported that “Jeter, picked by People magazine as one of the world’s most eligible bachelors, has been linked with models, singers, actresses and athletes of various racial and ethnic backgrounds in New York’s gossip columns.”
And as Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League points out “Celebrity status does not immunize anyone from the poisonous arrows of hate.”

So even on a mixed-media site you can find garbage like this. The comments by ABW are absurd and ignorant but unfortunately all too typical. Do black women have a collective insecurity problem or are they simply hypocrites? Over my 30 plus years I have seen plenty of high profile black female models with white boyfriends and white husbands. So where were their death threats? Where was their hate mail? So whom did that leave the black men to marry? This nation had set up anti-miscegenation laws for decades whose main intent was clearly to prevent any pairings between black men and white women. The racist Turner Diaries talks about killing any white females who slept outside their race but does not condemn white men for having sex with a women of another race. Clearly this country’s biggest taboo has always been BM/WW and as a result the roots of hatred have been planted by that irrational fear. And this type of attitude is the thing ABW says she will support? Well, that tells you everything about her that you need to know and its not good.
I’ve seen Mariah Carrey’s name brought up and I wonder if people like ABW has issues with the fact that outside of Jeter, Mariah has never dated a black man that I’m aware of. Even more she doesn’t even appear to allow black men to be her love interests in her music videos. And yet I never heard the black community object to this at all. But, boy, let a black male music artist do that and the s**t will hit the fan. Tiger Woods is one-quarter black and gets attacked by the black community for dating and then marrying a white woman. Meanwhile Serena Williams, who has strong African features and appears not to have much if any mixed blood at all, is in a serious relationship with a white male for two years and there is no outcry. I especially don’t hear other black men crying about who Serena is dating; they don’t let it affect them. Why don’t black women try that? When there were rumors that Justin Timberlake had hooked up with Janet Jackson every black dude that I came across (yeah, not exactly a scientific study but what the hell) who spoke about the rumors gave Justin props. Now, if it was Usher who was rumored to be with Cameron Diaz I am sure most of the black women who would have discussed it i front of me would have rolled their eyes and claimed that Usher was a typical sellout, yada, yada.
When it comes to BM/WW pairing there appears to be an insecurity problem that affects black women and white men in such a way that they react very negatively towards such a coupling. This is not to say that there aren’t any black women and white men who have similar complaints about WM/BW pairings or that there aren’t any black women and white men who are very open minded and okay with both types of black-white relationships. This is not also to say that there aren’t any black men and white women who are closed minded and just as bad in dealing with people in an interracial relationship either. But IMO the majority of the hostility appears to come from black females and white males who object to black men and white women dating. I especially don’t understand where the white men are coming from considering that they date Asian women by far in larger percentages than white women date Asian men (I wonder if white women go around whining about that).
I would imagine that one reason why there is more dating between black men and white women is because FOREVER there was such a taboo about it. You keep telling people they shouldn’t do something and often that makes them want to do it even more. And forbidden romances and forbidden sex often seem very exciting (its a common element in romance novels). Still the truth remains that black people in general (both men and women) date far less outside of their race than any group in America. Period. So what’s the big deal? Sure there are high profile black stars who hook up with white people but isn’t that to be expected? The more high profile you are the more chances you are likely, as a black person, to be in a position to socialize with the mainstream (aka white people). And the more you socialize with them there is an increased likelihood that you will become involved with a white person…or even an Asian or a Latino. However even the vast majority of the high profile blacks in this nation still marry other blacks. And that is something that can’t be said about high profile Asians and high profile Latinos in America who are very likely to be romantically involved with white people.
Maybe closed-minded people in the black community should realize this before they gripe about a black male celebrity who has the “nerve” to date a white woman. People who worry about that need lives. And people who wish for those types of couples to get hate mail probably need serious help.
Oh, and the person who claimed Jeter’s dad didn’t teach him to have respect for black women needs to try backing that up with somer serious facts. Is the assumption that any black person who marries outside their race will not teach their children to respect black people of the opposite sex? Or is the running theory just that black men won’t teach their mixed race kids (or in particular, sons) not to respect black women? What paranoid garbage, especially since Jeter has a sister who very much looks black and seems to be loved by the family. Here’s a thought—-maybe Jeter dates women who remind him most of his mom.

The irony here is that he is just as racist against Black women as these mail writers are supposedly against him (for being racist against Black women).
And yes, Mariah Carey could basically pass as White/Latina with her light skin and “good” hair, so no she don’t count…

Just look at the diaspora of the African race and how slavery brought us to different places with different experiences… Yes, if Derek Jeeter was born during slavery days, he would be considered black…he might have been a ‘house slave’ .whether he considers himself black, mixed or not…he is a minority…a person of color…and he will get treated as such and has to know that he is a wonderful combination of races, to carry his culture and his history with him proudly…not to worry about racist attitudes..they will be there as long as there are races…….as for his choice of women…..maybe he’s fascinated with what he considers beautiful….as misconceived as it may be….beautiful people come in all colors……..it’s what is on the inside that really matters……..
