“The Kims of Comedy”
JC
AsianWeek reports on a new trio of Korean comics who have come together to form “The Kims of Comedy”. They cover the usual inappropriate/raunchy topics, plus transracial adoption and mixed identity — one member (Kevin Shea) is a transracial adoptee, and one (Steve Byrne) is mixed.
Cool and captivating Kevin Shea was born in Seoul, Korea and adopted by an Irish American family at the age of seven to be raised near Philadelphia. Rather than fond memories of “shut your mouth or I’ll do it for you,” Shea –– whose adopted family already had two daughters of their own and also adopted another Korean sibling –– remembers it more like “shut your mouth … because I still have the receipt.” It isn’t clear whether or not that shaped his self-described sense of “edgy” humor, but that it exists is no joke.
Steve Byrne’s material ranged from his Korean and Caucasian mixed heritage to how a girlfriend’s cold feet in bed felt like “cold midget hands.”
