Oh no. Hybrid Vigor on the big screen?!

JC
philippa schuylerPhilippa Schuyler was a biracial pianist/prodigy who rose to fame in the 40s. Digital Spy reports that the upcoming film about her life, Composition in Black and White (based on the book of the same title) will also introduce viewers to Philippa’s hybrid-vigor-subscribing-parents. Look out! :| Filming starts this summer. Halle Berry is producing and Alicia Keys will play Philippa.

The movie tells the story of writer George Schuyler and artist Josephine Cogdell, a interracial couple who thought that mixed race children were intellectually superior to single race children.

By the way, for those of you who are not famliar with the term “hybrid vigor,” the definition is:

the marked vigor or capacity for growth often exhibited by crossbred animals or plants

However this is not based in reality…it’s bull…and we at MMW do not like hybrid vigor theorists who go around spouting this nonsense. I’m sure you’ve all heard it (sometimes from mixed people themselves!): “Mixed people are the most beautiful and the healthiest and the smartest and the……..” JUST STOP.

I second that, HYBRID VIGOR has got to stop! (That includes it coming from mixed as well as non-mixed people.) Can we stop talking about multiethnic people like corn or tomatoes or flowers? We’re talking about people, people! Pat yourself on the back for having a positive outlook on mixed folks, but puleez do not put mixed people on a pedestal like a trophy.

There is nothing wrong with flaunting beauty and vigor when it is obvious. Don’t downplay yourselves, whether you are a recent mix or a mix from billions of years ago.
