IR romances in Harry Potter series
MBF (a new MMW contributor!)
The popular “Harry Potter” series contains interracial romances where race is not an issue. Kudos goes to J.K. Rowling, creator of the Harry Potter series, for including such since Great Britain is a multiracial place.
Many examples abound. For instance, Harry’s first crush is on a girl named Cho Chang, of Chinese descent. Both Harry and his best friend, Ron Weasley, attend the Yule Ball (a prom) with Indian girls who are twin sisters. One of Ron’s older brothers goes to the Yule Ball with a black girl, Cho Chang actually goes to the ball with a white guy, and Ron’s younger sister dates a black boy for a time.
In addition to the above mentioned deals, the books do deal with discrimination, tolerance, choices, good vs. evil, and a myriad of other concerns (i.e., people being discriminated against because they do not come from wizard families or associate with “muggles” - non-magic people) however, none of it has to do with color or ethnicity. In other words, race is a non-issue in the wizarding community.
On a sour note, however, the young actress who will portray Harry Potter’s love interest, newcomer Katie Leung, has already been met with a firestorm of negativity. On the internet, scores of jealous fan girls of Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) have made nasty comments, many of
them racist, about her. As a fan of movies and movie stars, I actually saw this coming a long time ago.
I thought that I would contribute this bit of information if it hadn’t been seen yet as a way of informing all of those kids, both young and old, about the inclusion of interracial romance in the Harry Potter series. Now mixed kids can see it for themselves in both the books and on the screen. ![]()

It’s true that the Harry Potter movies have shown great progress in terms of color mixing.
But that is one of the things that really stuck out with me in the first two episodes: only white characters. Now at least the secondary characters are a bit more diverse.
