GQ article on Hollywood’s take on IR couples

CVK
A couple of people have alerted us to another article in this month’s GQ that discusses representations of interracial relationships in Hollywood (thanks Marty and Jessica for the heads-up!). Unfortunately it’s not online so we can’t link to it. But basically it retreads some themes we’ve discussed on MMW in the past.

Column “The Critic” talks about why you won’t see Will Smith or any other black male actor playing opposite a white actress in a romantic comedy anytime soon because that kind of interracial love story is still taboo. And casting them opposite black women won’t work either because Hollywood execs think that white audiences don’t want to see movies about two black people in love. And then on the rare occasion when you do see an interracial relationship, that’s often the whole point of the movie. And as a result, there’s little individuality given to the characters.
