Yet another cross-burning

CVK
Another interracial couple–this time in Tennessee–has found a burning cross on their yard. Chattanooga’s News Channel 9 reports that the wife knows who did it.

She says she knows who did it and the kids have been in her home, eaten at her table, and played with her son. And according to Mrs. Chatman, the police pulled several kids out of school yesterday at North West High School to question them.

But police won’t confirm or deny Mrs. Chatman’s claim. They say they’re not ruling anything out. Right now their main focus is neighbors and people the Chatman’s know. The police are also trying to determine if the cross burning was a hate crime or if it is just a bad prank. They say the line between the two is blurry.

“Is it just a very poor practical joke in bad taste or is there really malice and forethought, is there really hate?” questioned Sheriff Scott Chitwood.

I love how the police are always so skeptical that it’s a hate crime. (It was the same story a month ago in Charlotte.) Hello? It’s a BURNING CROSS. How much more obvious does it have to be? Do the cops have to find scorch markings in the lawn that spell out “T-H-I-S I-S A H-A-T-E C-R-I-M-E” in order to take it seriously?

Seems like something worthy of a Jeff Foxworthy routine…

“If you just happen to nail 2 pieces of wood together at 90 degrees, stash it over at the neighbors’ house, and light it on fire… it might be a hate crime.”

    *sigh*
