Essence on Mariah Carey’s struggles with mixed race identity

CVK
mariah carey essenceMariah Carey graces the cover of Essence’s April issue. Though the coverline takes a one-drop stance (”Mariah Carey: America’s Most Misunderstood Black Woman”), the article inside deals almost completely with her mixed identity, and makes for pretty interesting reading. Here are some excerpts:

So this isn’t a twenty-first-century version of Imitation of Life. Still, race and racial identity have been central themes throughout Carey’s career—arguably more so than for any other artist of her generation. It took folks forever to figure out where Carey fit in ethnically despite the fact that she never denied her mixed heritage. In an ideal world it shouldn’t matter. But as we all know, America’s stance on race matters is far from ideal. The critics can be cruel. Black cultural writer Nelson George once wrote that Carey was “being marketed as the White Whitney Houston.” And in 1998, the ubiquitously mean Sandra Bernhard had this to say about Carey in her one-woman show I’m Still Here… Damn It!: “Now she’s trying to backtrack on our asses, getting’ real niggerish up there at the Royalton Hotel suite, with Puff Daddy and all the greasy chain-wearing Black men, ‘Ooooh, Daddy… I got a little bit of Black in me too. I didn’t tell you that?”

Carey’s nephew, 27-year-old attorney Shawn McDonald, has watched Carey struggle with folks’ questioning her allegiance. The two are like brother and sister. He concedes that both have contended with the raised eyebrows. “Early on people didn’t know what to make of her,” McDonald remembers. “Some still don’t understand she’s multiracial.”

Others’ responses would often take Carey by surprise. After all, it was impossible to know when her “of color” status was going to make someone flip. “My struggles began when I was 5,” she recalls. Two moments crystallized this for Carey: The first was when two White teacher’s assistants laughed at her for trying to draw her father with a brown crayon. The second was Carey’s taking her 6-year-old best friend to her father’s house and her friend’s bursting into tears at the sight of a Black man hugging his now obviously not-White daughter.

Other Blacks could also be less than sympathetic. Adds McDonald: “Some think we’re not Black enough.” Even her frequent collaborator, uberproducer and music mogul Jermaine Dupri, confesses he had no idea what to do with Carey when she first walked into his studio, handed him a Wu-Tang Clan CD, and told him she wanted to sample it. “I thought, This White girl is crazy,” laughs Dupri. “I didn’t know she was mixed. But after hanging out with her I realized she listens to hip-hop all day long.”

Some of the confusion stems from the way Carey was marketed. In the coded racial parlance of urban-music culture, pop reads “White” and hip-hop reads “Black.” Carey was a carefully crafted pop persona–so much so that her earliest attempts to incorporate hip hop into her repertoire were met with resistance from her label. A racially ambiguous-looking Black girl with drop-the-mike pipes was the next best thing to blue-eyed soul–why screw that up by making music and videos with visibly Black rap artists?…

Perhaps the most pivotal friendship was with New York Yankee superstar Derek Jeter, whom Carey began dating when she separated from Mottola in 1997. With Jeter, who’s biracial, Carey believed she’d finally met someone who could understand her struggles. “I used to think that 90 percent of the reason my life was messed up was because I was mixed. It was important for me that he was from a loving interracial family. He was a catalyst for my transition from my life with Tommy. And I’m so grateful for that.”

Essence is a stupid, black militant, magazine. I think people like Mariah would make more sense saying their white, she looks like it. But I’m bored with continuing that specific debate.

  2. Lyonside wrote:

Um, I’m not planning to get into past debates again, but… Carey’s skin color is darker than Beals. That’s whacked by your standards of who should and shouldn’t be mixed, right? So where do you draw the color/hair/face feature line for who is or isn’t allowed to be called mixed?

And who of mixed heritage DOESN’T look white to you?

  3. Damie wrote:

Carey looks white to me, like the medeteranians. I only give my opinions, I would never command anyone how to identify.

I’ve met many people of greek, italian, and turkish descent.

None of them have looked like Mariah Carey.

Maybe the “mediterranean” people you know are, well, mixed?

  5. Damie wrote:

Mere individual perception isn’t worth debate. I’m fascinated by human genealogy, and actually a good portion of “Meds” do have a slight mix on average. Especially Sicilians, some Greeks and southern Spaniards who were DNA tested as 3% black. No one is totally pure, but many people are overwhelmingly one race.

Black genes over dominate white genes, so any one with I dont know some random number…..15% of black in them, can have overwhelming black features. Even if she wanted to call herself white, I don’t think that they would let her, because its obvious that she’s not all white, thats why when she first came out, stupid people were giving her a hard time because they couldnt claim her as bein a “white person”, with that beautiful “soulfull” voice and racially ambiguous looks. And how dare you refer to essence as a stupid “black militant” magazine, so If blacks have something that they can portray “themselves” in positively and its not targeting white people, or any other race. its “militant”, If essence is militant, then YM, Vogue, Elle and all those other “white dominated” magazines are militant also, because they obviously target rich to middle class suburban white teens and adults, they exude the same exclusiveness, just in a different way, this is obvious when they throw in a few blacks here and there to try to suffice. If we don’t target our race in a positive way who will?? obviously not vogue or “Cosmo”

This is why do not read essence–it is written by some of the most ignorant self loathing simple minded folks on the planet. The fact that blackness is only being marketed as “blood” and phenotype is problematic. This is the big news? Mariah Carey the most misunderstood black woman??? Please. Have they spoken about the women in America protesting the genocide in Sudan? Have they covered the women starting non-profits for under privileged girls? Yes, race is an issue and being mixed race can hurt someone as they are forming their identity–however, blackness is not just about your blood–it is about your brain. Women like Peggy McIntosh go unmentioned in their mag but WOW Mariah Carey!!!!!!!!

“I didn’t know she was mixed. But after hanging out with her I realized she listens to hip-hop all day long.”

Is he fucking kidding me???? Listening to hip hop cancels out her “mixed heritage???” Um, that is by far one of the most ignorant pieces of shit I have ever read–especially since–statistically the majority of people who listen to hip hop are white.

Ugh. It is trash. Don’t waste your money/time.

  9. Lucy wrote:

i totally agree with AJ. i am white and i listen to hip-hop. what the hell was that man going on about.
Essence magazine appears to describe her struggles through life, but she’s famous and rich for fuck sake. Didn’t they see the pics of her in heat with a lorry load of luggage.
To truly see how ‘mixed race,’ people are percieved they need to talk to some that live in the normal world, not some stuck up, rich tart.

  10. Naisha wrote:

ummm….black people CREATED hip-hop and theres no argument there, so that really makes your statistics nothing of worth, they can “listen” to it all they want to. And to “lucy” Im sure Mariah Carey has not been rich her entire life, but she has been multiracial her entire life, I think she would have some authority on the subject, especially to someone who’s not even biracial and from the outside looking in.

  11. Lisa wrote:

There is some truth in all the comments listed here. And on many levels its all relevant. AJ obviously gets “it”. And thats a relief because I thought I was the only one paying attention, keeping watch, reading, listening and observing, while the rest of you all miss the big picture. All of this bullshit in these magazines, the booty shakin in these videos, and these “so called” rappers hatin on each other is a diversion. The purpose of which is to shift everyones focus. While ya’ll are looking over here the real shit is goin down in Africa. Oh and most definitely here in the states too. While you all debate about Mariah Carey, another genocide is taking place in the Sudan. Remember Rwanda? in 93/94? Yet another mass(1million Africanz) genocide that occured while Clinton was sittin in office gettin his d_ _ _ sucked by Monica. Yeah, their plan is to wipe out the MotherLand because of its natural resources, among other things. They done put that reverse psych on ya’ll again. They make you dislike something, and then when you throw it away, their right behind you picking it up. They steel your culture and then sell it right back to you. They give you a record label but they own the distribution. They advertise their products with your music. They hate the way we speak, but they love the “slang “phrases we come up with so they put them in the dictionary, in commercials and ads. Hell they even use ‘em after we’ve moved on to the next one. They wanna be us so damn bad, but they can’t so they make us hate ourselves. I dont know ’bout ya’ll but loves me some Black Folk. So stop fallin for the diversion tactics and pay attention to the real stories of substance that should arouse discussion. The stories that are relegated to the back page of a newspaper in some tiny article or better yet in some magazine some black folk would dare to pick up!

Well, all I can say is whatever. Essence seems to have “embraced” Mariah. But it’s not so hard to understand what Mariah has typically done. She has exploited her “Blackness” to make a buck. She’s only “Black” when it is convenient to be “Black”.

Oh. . .and about the title of the article. . .er. . .Mariah is “Black”, well when she wants to be. . .along with a host of other things. You folks need to grow up and understand a person can be a member of many cultures as long as those cultures accept them.

Do “Black” folks accept Mariah as being “Black”? Er . .yep. No matter how nutty she is.

As for her membership in other cultures American Indian, “White”, etc. that’s not “our” business.

All we can do is learn about ourselves and where we came from so no one else can claim our culture, or tell us where we came from, and as far as slanf id concerned, I believe we should know whats ignornant and what is not, do want to know where “slang” came from, it came from when slaves couldnt read, and we just kept our “ignorant”language, we arent slaves anymore, but we still speak like them. It may only be terms of endearment, but lets face it, other races see us ignorant for it, they may wanna be like us, but when they go into an interview, they speal properly. We need to speak properly at all times. and DOGON- how can someone exploit their “blackness” for a buck? if thats the case, almost of black artists would be multiplatinum, umm I think it has something to do with talent. She makes music that people like, you can’t just pull that out of your ass. Either your born with it or not, because trust me I’ve seen many oreos, black and white who try to act fully black, and I can see right through it. If your black and you where raised with a very weak standard of “blackness” you should be yourself. Shes just being herself, and anyway, again I say, if your not multiracial you don’t really know hat its like so you can’t criticize and pull someone from race to race based on looks, or actions, anytime you want.

mariah carey is hispanic although she is really mixed race. why is it okay is someone who is mixed with white/asian, hispanic/white or indian to say that they are both races and they dont have to choose a monoracial label,
but if someone is mixed with black/white, black/hispanic, black/indian or black and asian they must choose a monoracial label. that is very racist discriminatory and disgusting. i agree that even though mariah carey is black as well as hispanic she is white too. mariah carey is white or shall i say half white. so yes it is okay to call her white too. she is not all white but only half, i do agree on that. i read in her story when she had an interview with jet magazine nearly six years ago in late may 1999 she was talking about how people would misjudge her saying, they claim she would say things out of the blue and they would take it out of context and they would see her as a tramp(in which she is not) they lying and falsely accused her of sleeping around in which she never did, she is not that kind of lady, no not miss mariah, she is too intelligent for that. then there was the part where she says ” why is it that if someone is chinese and italian they dont have to define who they are but when it comes to a black and white thing people are put up in arms. if mariah was on a hispanic magazine would she be labelled ” americas misunderstood hispanic woman” and if she were on an irish examiner magazine would she be labelled “americas misunderstood irish woman”.

It’s not just me who thinks that I was watching her on a tv show the other day along with a few other people. They were saying she was not black no way she could be and I agree. It’s like she is ashamed of her white and hispanic side. Her skin is pale, with caked on orange tan its obvious. Her hair is dyed blond. Why is it someone who claims to be black is trying hard to look more white than she is?

Why is it if you say you have 2% black in you, you are black?? On the other races you have 2% you arent considered enough to be that race to count?
Why doesnt she do everyone a favor and go back to the way she used to be curly brown hair and pale skin and make good music like she used to?

Just because she chooses to primarily celebrate her black culture does not making her a hater of all of her other “mixes”. Goodness, she woke up to the face of a white mother most of her life so it would be ridiculous for people to think that she doesn’t realize that she is also part white/hispanic. I think the mixed race people that are running so hard from their black side are always attacking anybody that is mixed with black that readily embraces their blackness with no issues. Where the hell have you been?
What do you think the only “black” people are in America and in Africa?? Huh??

Mariah’s father is a self-identified black man that was raised in another country that speaks Spanish, but he is still not black? You are kidding me, right?
Furthermore,I have a Masters degree and I am currently working on my PhD and writing my dissertation on Blacks and the skin color conflict around the world. That certainly doesn’t make me the race relations guru but I am not an idiot and I am well studied in this area. So please save the dumb “get an education” statements for the “just say no” campaign.
Also, please stop using the Internet as your only educational resource. Remember the internet is primarily comprised of opinions - very few facts. Try studying history and other cultures before you begin ranting about what race a person SHOULD call themselve just because they live in a particular country.
Also, who said Italians were classed as black? You totally lost me there. I said my father is Italian and my mother is black- so where did you get “Italians are classed at black ” from? “I” chose to call myself black - that IS my choice to do so. I love my father and respect him and the Italian culture. I have no reason to deny that side of me. In conversation I acknowledge it and talk candidly about being mixed without shame or fear . Mind you I was not raised in some of the environments that some mixed race have experienced. I was raised around primarily respectful black and white people that did not spend time beating up on a person because they were a little different.

Now understand, Venezula is a country with a culture, white is a culture and same goes for “black”, so your white is white and black is black, veni is veni statement is damn ridiculous.
You may loathe black people and want to deny that part of you if you are partially black, but there are countless people that have no problem. This is my fear with the multiracial movement- instead of it forging ahead positiveness about mixed race people it will bring out in extreme numbers the “self-haters” that have been waiting for a platform to make themselves appear to be better that “regular” blacks being they have white blood.

Stereotypes follow every group so if you are hoping to escape any that surround black people you will be saddenly mistaken. In a few more years there will be plenty of sterertypes to go around for
mulitracial people then you can really feel like you have your own race then.
I am a proud Creole woman and I too say that I am black ! What is the problem with that ? Marian Carey is her own woman and does not have to say she is hispanic . She can say she is hispanic, white and black. Just because she happens to favor her black culture does not make her mindless and stupid. Stop viewing black culture only based on the stupid crap you in on TV - those are exploited images. There are many intelligent, wealthy, diginfied black people so Mariah has every reason to want to be apart of this culture. As well Essence magazine is mainly a black magazine so of

His aunt (his mom’s sis) was my professor in graduate school and she brought us pictures and discussed her family with us. The aunt is a medium brown skin woman and Cedric’s mother is light skin . This is an amazing discussion. Interesting becuase the opinions are very strong. Frightening because of the misinformation being shared. I suppose that’s the blessing and the curse of the internet. I applaud Tee for breaking it down so to speak. One day I hope America learns the difference between race and culture. People of who have a racially indegenous background that can be traced to Africa (described as Negroid by sociologist) were sold as slaves all over Europe, North America, South America, and the Carribean from the 1600’s through the early 1800’s. Slavery ended sooner in some places than others of course. The decendents of those people are alive and well some of them look like Vanessa Williams (former Miss America) and some like Missy Elliot as well as everything else in between. Blackness or Nego-ness outside of Africa is hard to define sometimes. America has defined anyone with a black ancestor as black, still many mixed-race and fair skinned blacks have passed for white for years especially after the slaves were emancipated–it was easier. Are mixed race people (black/white) black or white…I think they get to choose–nobody can force them either way. If they “look black” then they don’t have as much of choice…society chooses. Mariah Carey is whatever she wants to be–her choice. Also, please understand Hispanic is a culture it is not a race. Hispanic people come in all flavors, black, brown, yellow and red. Hispanic people share a culture. According to anthropologist there are three races (Negroid, Mongoloid, and Caucausoid), however there are thousands of ethnic and cultural groups on planet earth. Google these terms, take a social sciences class on some of these issues—racial identity, racial groups, history of slavey in the americas, etc.

Well, Mariah is mixed. And I think it’s stupid to say that Mariah can say she is waht she wants, because that is lying. She can say she’s black but saying so is not the whole truth. If that’s the case I can go around saying I’m White when I’m full blown Black. that would make me look ridiculous. Most people say that you are what your daddy is. I think Mariah probaly just says whatever because she’s tired of people asking her, I mean she said she had to deal with it her whole life. Ok. I hope this helps you guys out. Mariah has explained her heritage in an interview that I’ve just watched. She made it pretty easy for me to understand:

    Her mother is white.
Her paternal grandfather was half black and half Hispanic, which means her father was quarter Hispanic and 3 quarters black.

That makes her half white. Acute (less than a quarter) Hispanic and the rest black.

Lots of misinformation about Mariah. Mariah’s father (Alfred) was born and raised in Harlem. His father (Roberto) immigrated from Venezuela when he was around 12 years old. His last name was Nunez. He was forced to change it, and he choose Carey. There is a picture of him floating around. Her father’s mother was African American from Louisana.

Mariah is still to this day learning more about her family history. It helps that Mariah and her father didn’t have much contact when she was younger, and Alfred was estranged from his father when his parents got a divorce when he was a kid until like six months before he (Roberto) died in 1994. Mariah didn’t meet her grandfather until she was seven, and up until then had thought he was Cuban.

Here are two quotes from Mariah from a 2003 Latina magazine article:

    1. Recently, through a series of events that combined love, success, and tragedy, Mariah began to search for her Venezuelan roots and, ultimately, her answers to these questions. “My father was mostly African American, and his father was Venezuelan. But we don’t know if he was Venezuelan and white or Venezuelan and black,” Mariah says of the twisting branches of her father’s family tree. “We’re confused.”

    2. Growing up in Harlem and the Bronx, New York, Alfred Roy identified more with his African American side. “But as he got older,” Mariah recounts, “he wanted to investigate more of every aspect of what he was. That’s when he started on his quest to trace his roots.” It was a daunting project from the start. “My father just told me a story this past year,” Mariah says. “We had always thought that ‘Carey’ was a name that my grandfather made up. But what we found out is that my great-grandmother Margarita Nunez was with a man named Carey. They weren’t married, but my grandfather took his name because he was actually his father.” Adding to the mystery was Mr. Carey’s lineage: “Apparently he had red hair and freckles, but he could’ve been black or white. We just don’t know.”

Speaking as a biracial person who has grown up in a predominately white environment, I think it is stupid for someone to try and categorize mixed individuals as any one group. My father is from Nigeria, my mother is from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and is 50% Polish and 50% German. When I am asked what my race is I proudly break it down that I am mixed…I would never claim to be completely black as to disregard my white heritage. And furthermore I have never found it a problem being accepted by either of the two communities (meaning “whites” or “blacks”). I have friends of all different races, family members of all different descents and I think it is stupid and repressive to keep fighting about race. Does it matter what your skin color is, really? We all look the same on the inside…so why don’t we all move on as the same species and focus our attention on more important issues.

I always thought she was someone trying to get in where she could fit in, that’s why she gets beat up about it. Halle Berry has always said she was black, and that was it, it was never a mystery. I have seen mariah do interviews for a mainstream audience and she is well herself I guess, but then I have seen her interviews geared towards black folks and her whole personality changed, she was straight black, if I may. I honestly think that she is one of those who’s trying to use this to her advantage. One of the earlier posters posted that she saw mariah in an interview where she stated at one point she wouldn’t even claim her black heritage, I saw that same interview and immediately I started to think if you couldn’t claim us then why your doing now. She ain’t real ya’ll, she ain’t real. she will use her heritage to her advantage if she can i.e her album cover (Mimi) I’ve never known her to be that brown. I don’t feel sorry for her, she knows exactly what she’s doing. If she wanted to appeal to a predominantly white audience she would go back to doing albums like her first one. If she wanted to appeal to more of an hispanic audience she would go back to dating luis and she would say things like and I quote “I’m more hispanic than anything else” yes she has made that comment to, but only when it seemed to be convenient she was dating luis at the time. I don’t even know where this hispanic stuff is coming from. During the slave trade, Africans had settled on islands and countries all over the world. People from Trinidad, Jamaica,Guyana and other islands in the Caribbean still don’t know their origins. In addition, WHAT THE HELL do you mean her father doesn’t look black. Y’all are blind. I believe Mariah is embracing her father’s side more because she was most accepted that way. Think about it. Who were her worst critics? Who did she have the most trouble from growing up? As for the Comment made by Jermaine Dupri, “I didn’t know she was mixed. But after hanging out with her I realized she listens to hip-hop all day long.”, he’s referring to when he first met her, back in the 90s when mixed artists had just started entering the business. When y’all say that you listen to hip hop or r&b, you probably wouldn’t have then. There was only a little percent of white people who listened to those genres(including Marky Mark, and Vanilla Ice). I’m sure you can’t name a song from marvin gaye, al green, earth wind and fire, or ottis redding even today without searching for some on Google! Also with the way her hair was back then, and with that low, harmonic voice I’d have trouble thinking she was white, as JD did.
For those who said it’s wrong to celebrate and classify yourself of one race, if you’re mixed, you guys should come to where I’m from and see all the white and hispanic people who claim they are black even if they’re pure, because they grew up with, and were practically raised by, Black people. Now, Mariah had the choice to embrace her Black side or her White side, and guess which one she chose?
As for the ones that say she looks white so she should be classified as white. Haven’t y’all heard of dye, a straightening iron, and make-up. So maybe her skin isn’t black. I’m Black, If y’all haven’t caught on yet, and my family members and I have fair skin. Most of my family members have lighter skin than her’s. So you’re probably thinking why call us Black when we look more brown or white. But why call you people White, when you look more Pink.
To conclude, don’t be hatin’ on her because she indulges in the dispensation of being Black. If she wants people to categorize
her as Black then deal with it!!!

As I’ve said before, Mariah’s race is her own business. If she wants to identify as mixed, or black or white or Hispanic or whatever, then that is up to her. She is a talented individual (in my humble opinion). She does not look like your average black woman (my humble opinion again), because she isn’t. She is a blend of races & cultural experiences. She is a mixed person. And most African-Americans might have some “other” types of ancestry, but they don’t look like her. Most black people just look like black people, even the light-skinned ones. Some people on the other hand are racially ambiguous so it becomes difficult to put them in a box. I fit this description, so does Mariah Carey, and some other mixed folks as well. Who are we to judge her when we don’t know her personally?

We shouldn’t try to define other people. Allow them to define themselves & identify with whatever race or culture they feel most comfortable with.

She has made it known that she is mixed, so she has absolutley no obligation to anyone. I get so much crap from my black friends for dressing “like a white girl”; and my white friends insist on notifying me whenever my hair is “nappy” or I am talking “like a ghetto person”. There is no such thing as “venezulean blood.” Don’t you know that the people of Venezula (sp?) are a mixed-raced people. Have you ever seen a picture of Mariah Carey’s father? He looked no different than African-Americans living in the United States or continental Africans for that matter. I think peoples’ perceptions on how African-Americans “look” in comparisons to other people of African descent is horribly flawed because such perceptions are based on racial stereotypes. Yes, it is very obvious that Ms. Carey is of mixed ethnic background, but I think some of the posters on this site are exaggerating the phenotypes of Africans and African-Americans in comparison to the phenotypes of other peoples. I think many of the posters on this site are horribly ignorant as to the ethnic make-up of the world’s populations. Many of you are confusing NATIONALITY with RACE/ETHNICITY as in the case of Bella here who belives in “venezulean blood.” Some of you obviously have not spent much time with people of African descent, otherwise you would appreciate the diversity in their forms. Just last night I was watching a program on PBS about the people of the Cameroons. The people came in a variety of skin tones–some were dark/black skinned, some had a reddish undertone, and some were the color of copper. Most of the people had short kinky hair however some had wavy/kinky curly hair (and no these people were not racially mixed as we term it. There was a child briefly featured in the program, who had black curly hair. Both his mother and father were of African descent.) Some of the people had wide noses, others had thin narrow noses. Some had full lips, other thin. My point is that no group of people have a monopoly on full lips, narrow noses, coarse hair, straight hair etc. Many of the “differences” we see and try to affix to race, is more the result of environment, genetic isolation and genetic drift. But because so many of us are so narrow-minded and feel some kind of security from grasping firmly to unscientific, racists stereotypes, we continue to base our assumptions on people and their worth on the illogical notion of race. Mariah Carey has a diverse ethnic background, and more power to her. But lets try to think with reason here. We are all more alike than different, no matter where your forefathers come from.

That said, untill the baby boomer generation long fades into the sunset, there will always be racial tensions and the mixed people are the link between the feuding groups…… makes you wonder though, its the 21st century and we are having this discussion…shame on all of us…

I’m not so sure its the mixed people that are the link between the two feuding groups. Many mixed people are racists against African-Americans and think that African-Americans are out to get them. I read so much anti-black propaganda on many of this mixed-raced sites that I have to remind myself that these are non-white people who are making these statements. Some of the stuff I have read mirrors the raving of neo-nazi and white supremists. So long as all people belive that anything black is inferior, there will always exist conflict. I too use to think that persons of mixed raced background were in the forefront of racial harmony, but after logging on to numerous mixed-raced forums I have come to see things differently now.

In regards to “Okay???”’s post ^^^^ …i hear what you are saying…thats totally wrong if some mixed people feel the need to disassociate themselves from the mainstream group to justify they are of better caliber than the rest of mixed people…i would summarize it as the environ they were brought up in… e.g a mixed person who was born into a world where a black,..-mostly a male who was a non-supportive parent did not hold up his end as a parent…

Lets not forget, nobody is born a racist pig, its a learned thing, or if i may say so, its an acquired taste due to life experiences… i still believe the mixed people play a vital role in reminding us that even in the chaotic and hostile world we live in, at the end of the day, we can still produce charming/ beautiful/ educated/ well adjusted/ and most of all…humans !!! all the difference in the world !! I would give anything in the world to live to see all races live side by side as loving neighbors….

“If wishes were horses”…so to speak… To quote somebody, “Cant we all just fuck and look the same?”…. I hope so…then we can find some other bizzare reason to hate on each other…..

So, it seems that Mariah is a true, red-blooded American.
This is, after all, the great melting pot. Our genetic diversity may be our greatest protection in the long run. In-breeding often leads to terrible defects. Isn’t it interesting that “whites” lie in the sun to darken their skin, and a “good tan” is a very desirable thing. “Blacks,” even those who claim to be proud of their heritage, see being “light-skinned” as desirable and often straighten and/ or bleach their hair into a more caucasian type of appearance. Is there a perfect skin tone somewhere in between? Perhaps that would be Mariah. I heard years ago that scientists had discovered that there was some common female ancestor, which they named “Eve,” who apparently posessed a very similar genetic makeup as the lovely Mariah. One thing is certain, a seven octive range is absolutely amazing. I hope she has some children to carry on her genetic blessing. I wouldn’t mind having a bit of natural tan, myself. All I have is freckles. I also wish she would return to her natural hair. It was lovely, and much more flattering to her complexion than artificial blond. I say, “Be proud of what God made you!”

What is the highest note that Mariah can sing? Does anyone know? I wonder if she has ever tried opera just for fun when she was bored. I heard recently that in 1999 a young French woman, Marie-Sol Chevalier, had broken the world record for highest note sung, the C above high C. I have a hard time imagining any notes higher than Mariah’s. How does she compare to that record, I wonder, or doesn’t it count if it isn’t opera? It seems to me that opera would be much more interesting with a voice that had as much character as Mariah’s. Just a thought.

Look, if Mariah Carey wants to say she’s pink or green or blue, then let her. It’s none of our business what she chooses to identify as. She’s always said she’s bi-racial, despite much much much resistance and pressure to identify as something someone else says she should. She’s remained true to herself, and for that I salute her: It takes a strong person to do that. And as for other people trying to co-opt her to their race, for crying out loud, please stop. She’s not going around telling YOU which label to wear, so why should YOU try to force HER to wear a label YOU feel more confortable with?????

she may not state that she is green (what a simplistic response nina) but after getting a glimpse of her Manhatten digs on Barbara Walters last night, trust me she’s not thinking about her ethnic background 24/7. She didn’t get wealthy by sitting around calculating how much “black” and “white” she got in her. The bills come each month, no matter what your ethnic background is. So yes, in this capitalist society GREEN IS THE ONLY COLOR THAT MATTERS!!!

mariah carey is hispanic(venezuelan) why doesnt she work with any hispanics. i once read an article on her 5 years ago that she wanted to go to venezuela to research her fathers venezuelan geneology.

  209. chrisiplin wrote:

Kudos to Lilian. She brings to light my beef with Mariah. Why not work with Latin artists? Mariah said something in a Spin magazine interview about her heritage. She does acknowledge being black, irish and venezuelan. but she prefers to run with the black image because it is cooler and people understand that black people have suffered. ms. carey obviously does not know anything about irish people and their struggles. it is a shame that she would pick one race over another just to sell records. if she cannot celebrate all of her races, then she should never market herself as mixed.

  210. you know... wrote:

Let not forget that her last relationship was with a hispanic male –Luis Miguel. That fact right there tends to debunk the argument that she has no affinity for Hispanic culture.

Also, lets not forget the Carey is an artist first and foremost who is in the business of selling records. Her tendency to not work with Latin artists (which is not true. She recorded a Spanish duet with her former boyfriend Luis Miguel) might have more to do with aestetics than with ethnic hatred.

Also you have to consider Carey’s upbring. She was raised by her mother who is Irish-American. Her father had very little influence on her life. That tends to explain why CULTURALLY she perhaps has more affinty for American Culture (which is influnced more by black culture than hispanic culture, especially when it comes to music) that Hispanic culture. The woman can only be what she is. There is a difference between having mixed ancestry and being grounded in a particular culture. Carey is grounded in American culture. Because she is in an industry that is dominated by Black culture–after all African-Americans inveneted Rock n’ Roll–and she tries to label herself as an R’B artists, it is not surprising that she would gravitate towards African-American producers/artists etc. as opposed to latino producers/artists. Though that’s not to say she has never or will never work with latino artists/producers. When she has an interest in making a latin infused album, I’m sure she will call on the lation producers/artists to help her out. Until then. why don’t some of you get a life and stop trying to put your head on her body. The woamn cant think for herself and live whatever lefe she choses. She doesn’t need anyone’s permission on what type of music to produce or what producers to work with. Music is music period. Stop trying to racialize everything.
