Chinese Restaurants, They’re Everywhere
RN

Years ago filmmaker Cheuk Kwan was in Istanbul and came across a Chinese restaurant. Kwan had heard that the owner had actually walked from China. The discovery and amazing story sparked a life-long obsession that resulted in a 13-part documentary series that took Kwan and his crew to more than 13 countries. Kwan’s camera captured amazing stories: the remnants of a Chinese culture in Cuba, an Evangelical Chinese Christian living amongst the strife in Haifa, and a restaurant owner dealing with apartheid in South Africa, to name just a few. Chinese Restaurants shows us how immigrants all over the world have learnt to cope, negotiate and thrive in their new homes. The documentary series has gained reviews at festivals worldwide. Three episodes of the documentary are currently showing at the Museum of Chinese in the Americas. For a list of upcoming screenings check the Chinese Restaurants site. Be sure to check out production diary of Kwoi Gin, the cinematographer on the series.
